If you know the rules of the company you have nothing to be intimidated by?
If you are screwing up and you do not know your stuff they can be tricky.
Key is do a good job and know your rights which are limited because of all that bullshit paperwork you signed all your rights away when you started.
If you know your rights based on handbook policies those HR fucks at big companies are a joke.
Take it from a guy who has never been fired and trust me.... I have caused some big shit at a few places I worked but they could not do shit because I showed up everyday and blew out the numbers. If they are fucking with you you have to hit it back but in a professional way and you can win.
Don't worry about HR and do your job

Look up a story that was on 20/20 recently about HR. It talked about how most larger companies HR departments are sneaky with a lot of things. Too much to talk about here, but main point is that you are always evaluated even if you dont know it.

More conspiracy theories. I've worked in corporate HR. The only time you need to be worried is if you are doing something wrong. The bottom line is, companies can lose a LOT of money via litigation and other ways if their HR department doesn't do things right. And the reason people call them "tricky" is because they actually are able to keep information confidential BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO.
Most people think it's a cake job. Try investigating a sexual harassment complaint. Try understanding all the ins and outs of employment law. Unemployment....Worker's Compensation...Performance Improvement Plans. Try having a normal conversation with an employee when you know their position is going to be eliminated in 2 weeks. Try escorting your Vice President of Operations out of the building after he gets fired.
I once participated in a termination meeting for an employee. He started going crazy and was talking about suicide. He looked directly at me and said, "and when I go, I don't go alone."
HR is a job that's easy to do poorly. It's really hard to do it well.

Think about it....you can send an e-mail out with 1 word in the wrong place and it could result in the company getting sued. You say the wrong thing to an employee....same thing. Why do you think most HR people are ass holes? They don't have the luxury of telling people what they think.
And like I said, they aren't trying to be "tricky." It's just that they know WAY more than the average employee about what is going on all over the company and they have to spend 100% of their time making sure they don't spill the beans. That's why they always seem like they are up to something. It's because they know a LOT.
