Every guitarist mentioned so far has a skill set of 100 out of 100. They all have differing styles but I can't see where any one of them could be considered "The Best". At that level they're all damned near perfect.
Now as to "favorite guitarists", I'll go with;
1 - Lowell George
2 - Hughie Thomasson
3 - Duane Allman
4 - Toy Caldwell
5 - Dave Hlubek

I just realized that my top 4 are all .
The four of them together averaged less than 40 years each on Earth.

Great list Count, but I think BB King should be in the top 5 of any list.

I know. it shocks everyone when they hear me say it. some people want to fight about it. But honestly, he's pretty standard. he's not even in the top 10 of Blues Guitarists. If you ask me, the following are far greater blues guitarists:
BB King
SRV
Albert King
Buddy Guy
Albert Collins
Son Seals
Robert Cray
Tinsley Ellis
And that's just off the top of my head. I understand that Clapton is more of a rock and blues guitarist, but his popularity is what gets him on the list, not his actual skill set, if you ask me. Better, Rock/Blues guitarists:
Derek Trucks
Duane Allman
Gary Moore
Warren Haynes
Hendrix
So listen, I'm not saying Eric Clapton sucks, but the fact that EVERYONE has him in their top 2 or 3 guitarists of all time is certainly an exaggeration. He should be in the top 20, for sure, but no more.

My favorite electric guitarist today is Buckethead. And bass guitarist would be Les Claypool of Primus. If you look past both of their intentional gimmickry, they both excel at their crafts.
To answer your initial question, I have not listened to much solo work from Hammett or Murray, but they have both produced a plethora of excellent metal music.

Les Claypool on "My name is Mudd" is very good.
Love the bass into on "Desolation Street" by The Cure
Don't forget grandpa...............................Les Paul. Not the best guitarist, but very influential.

It's called Fascination Street, and much respect to the Cure for their originality. And I just had an ear orgasm listening to "Just Like Heaven."
