I would absolutely keep it. I wouldn't feel bad about keeping it either because it is obvious that someone didn't value it enough to keep track of it.
I have returned a wallet with money in it before, but that is different.
My thoughts exactly.

As a former realtor, it's buyer beware, and do a home inspection.
I would keep it .
Ironically, my terminally ill Mother is having me help her clean out her house and she already has told me about a Stamp Collection, Bonds, Coin Collection, some Stocks etc that were left to me by my father so I guess I have some 'found ' money to collect. ..It's probably 25-50K based on her estimate.

How are you greedy if you FIND something in a attic?

I couldn't keep it. It wouldn't be able to stop thinking about the fact that it wasn't mine.
What I don't understand is how you can have that much cash lying around with nothing documented as to what is where.
I have a document that details every single account I have along with user names and pin numbers. Would it really be hard to add, "cash in ammo boxes in garage?"
Also, it sounds like the family just left some of this stuff for the new owners to clean out. That's a crap move. I don't know about you guys, but when my grandparents died we spent mucho time going through EVERYTHING before the house was cleaned out and then sold.
But I'll tell you one thing, if they didn't give me a $5K reward or something, I'd end up being a bit miffed.

My Father and now my Mother grew up in the 1940's/50's and both did very well in life.
But as I stated, it's not that uncommon for people of that generation to not be organized... Thankfully, I have convinced my mother.

I believe you are right. In fact, when my dad figured out his retirement date, us kids got together and in 3 or so separate nights over a 1 month period, proceeded to clean up all his crap that he had been keeping around. Papers he had not business keeping. Organized all of his stuff and made sure he had his affairs in order. We also went to a meeting with his financial planning institution so we understand what money is where.
I know that generation was a bit different that way, but wouldn't you as a child at least talk to your father about his affairs if he is at that age? I'm not blaming him, I'm blaming the kids. The stigma of it being taboo to ask about money affairs is OVA. They should know better IMO.
Hope all is well.
