One of the original sellers along the way took a pen knife to the thing to make the edges sharp (the primary factor for a card grade).
Then PSA, a grading company gave it an '8' grade (an insane grade for a card that is almost 100 years old and of the rarest of all cards ever produced) while one of the employees of the company KNEW someone trimmed the edges.
$2.8 million dollars later, all this crap comes to light. You gotta have some stones to cut the edges of the rarest and most expensive card of all time to pull of a sale for more money. To the guy who owns it now? I hope your ready to take a major loss...

Like a true grammar troll, he comes in the thread to over a four year difference when dealing with a century. Yes it is 1909 and I thought 1919 and your arithmetic is top notch. Such is life for people like this.

If you have terrible edges, a great surface, and it's perfectly centered, don't bother submitting the card becaus a) no one witll want it and b) PSA doesn't provide subgrades like BGS so you would never know edges take precedence when they grade it. The reason for subgrades is to differentiate gem cards form almost gem cards. These extra grades do not carry the same weight as the edges do.
It's like buying a car. It could have a great body, interior and the best sound system in the world, and if it doesn't run, who the hell wants the thing.
Same for ten edges on the cards. To prove it, severely damage the 4 edges on a card, submit it to PSA and when they give you a 2 grade say,"Hey the centering of this baby is perfect! Did you account for that??"

Buyers beware. Problem is seller not telling buyers that item has been restored. Frauds and amateur restorations have tarnished the value of professionally restored paper collectibles.

I wouldn't start collecting to be honest. The card market is saturated with jersey, autograph and game used pieces.
Then you have the whole grading issue which costs a fortune in my opinion (as high as $50 a card after shipping and handling).
Packs are ridiculously expensive.
If you want to collect, you should only collect vintage cards and ONLY buy graded cards off the web (eBay is by far the best). Even cards from the same set this Wagner was from can be had for a few hundred dollars and they are graded so you know what you are getting .
Bottom line. If you collect, don't expect a big return on investment. Today's great cards are yesterday's news tomorrow.

That is hilarious because I collected a few cards in 1989. I've got a Craig Biggio rookie card which isn't worth boo and still won't be when he (rightfully) goes into the hall of fame.
Boy there were some bad players back then.
A buddy of mine in college did buy 150 Frank Thomas rookie cards. I'll be curious as to what those might be worth if he goes to the hall. Probably not much because there were so many produced.
