Instead of all the focus on this idiot hick Coburn, and his ridiculous cry baby comments. How about some praise for the connections of Tonalist. In a game where the horses are mistreated pretty regularly, the owners and Clement chose to take it slow with Tonalist not get hung up on the Kentucky Derby and rush their horse into certain races just to get points and it definitely paid off for them. That was the path they chose for their horse and any idea of having to run in all 3 races or run in none of them is completely absurd. 

Funny how 2 horses who didn't run in the Derby or Preakness out finished ALL of them even the horses that skipped the Preakness. Might just go to show you what kind of Derby field CC beat.....

Tonalist is a big striding top notch horse and I think he will be a force to be reckoned with going forward.

ESPECIALLY when your 1 horse finished dead last......

Coburns idea of top 20 point earners "elgible" getting into KY DERBY field  should be the only ones allowed in any of 3 TC races....but say a horse gets injured but still has top 20 points would still be allowed to run in BEL or Preakness....Actually I really think this suggestion moves forward if we are to see another TC winner in our lifetimes..kinda like "college playoffs"

Totally agree that Tonalist and Commisioner and their connections are cowards.. totally unfair...CC will crush both should they decide to take him on at BC..... CC has and WILL accomplish more than BOTH of those ever will

Your kidding right? Owners and trainers can place their horses in any races they choose. I actually respect Tonalist connections for not getting wrapped up in the Derby hype and rushing him to get points. 

There is nothing unfair about any of this. And what BC race to you think CC will win? Maybe the BC mile, no shot in the Classic. IMO he has no shot against older horses.

You refer to animal cruelty which I agree with but remember what Sherman said after Derby win "i don't even run my 10k claimers back on 2 weeks rest"...again, you proved mine and Coburn's point. Since CC won KDerby he was committed to run in Preakness when he was hesitant..after winning that, they had to run in Belmont (I'm sure Sherman knew that was pushing CC)..why do you think there was a nasal strip controversy...That's why I started that thread, it gave them a way out...Sherman knew he was pushing CC and it showed in that final 1/4 despite the terrible ride by VE...And yes, Tonalist AND Commissioner will NEVER accomplish together what CC has already....but they sure did a great job of ganging up on him in Belmont

I dont get all the Coburn bashing, especially the mean name calling by some posters on here.  We can all agree or disagree with what he said or how he said it or when he said it, but the man apologized.  Yes it was 2 days later but he apologized and I thought it was heartfelt.  Some of you with all the name calling act like you've never done anything wrong or made mistakes in anything you do.  His mistake was making the comments in front of millions of people.  At least he had the balls to say what a lot of others are thinking.   Everyone is allowed to make some mistakes or bad decisions people, get over it.  At least we know hes passionate about the sport and his horse.  Just my 2 cents.

Sounds to me like you can't accept the fact that you were wrong about CC in the Belmont. You sound like as sore a loser as Coburn does. Why do you fail to mention Medal Count who also beat CC, he ran in the Derby too. 

Tonalist never ran in any qualifying races so how do you know if he was good enough or not? He sure had no problem crushing your boy on Saturday.  I'll say it again 2 horses who didn't run in the Derby or Preakness out finished all those horses. And you'll say but they didn't run in the Derby your right, they actually came back on shorter rest then the horses who skipped the Preakness. 

The Belmont was Commissioners 6 th race this year and Medal Counts 7th. They both beat him soundly. Just get over it, it's over

Exactly, just like TRAIN said, skipped the playoffs and headed right to the Super Bowl 

TOTALLY UNFAIR, "COWARDLY" and most importantly, TONALIST WAS NOT GOOD  EVEN GOOD ENOUGH TO QUALIFY

 Even Joe Public agrees with this "hick"   

And if you don't think all those "we just might lose cause these damn fresh horses just might get us, THOUGHTS" weren't rambling INSIDE Coburn's mind prerace, I just want you to explain how pointedly these sound ideas to equal the TC playing field were blurted out so quickly after such a narrow defeat 

COBURN really used his 15 minutes of fame effectively Real change is coming in TC series  

PS I was all over Medal Count 2nd or 3rd    Congrats to Tonalist, can't wait till they ever meet again

There will be no substantial change in the Triple Crown, which is just the way it should be.  Let's not cheapen the achievements of Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Affirmed and the others.  A triple crown winner should have been able to beat the best 3 year olds in America, at three different tracks, at three different distances.  Not just limited to the 19 other three year olds who were most qualified on the first Saturday in May, but any and all comers who wanted to take their shot on Preakness Day as well as Belmont day. If these proposed rules were in effect years, Man O War, arguably the greatest dirt horse of all time, would not have been able to win the Belmont. Fact is, Chrome wasn't good enough, just as the rest of the 2 out of 3'ers weren't. It appears that the only people complaining are racing newbies and know-nothings.

Opie you couldnt STOP talking about how CC was a "LOCK" to win the TC and now your past posting Medal Count and agreeing with Coburn!!! 

PLLLEEEAAASSSE. Those races are 3 SEPARATE events and the fact that Different COLTS can enter them is was makes the triple crown so hard and great. That Coburn Rant isnt going to change a thing and it shouldnt.

Yes but Medal Count did not run Preakness.  Tonalist, Medal Count, and Commisioner only ran 2 races since start of May I think.  The point is still the same that the guy is making---no horse that ran all 3 triple crown races beat CC in Belmont.

Of course they won't do what CC has already done---by definition.  He won 2/3 TC races---gonna be hard to top that unless they go on to win BC, etc.

CC may have run slow KD--but people forget he ran a fast Preakness---which may have contributed to slow Belmont.

Not saying CC is elite at all---just saying it is easy to see both sides of this issue.

Maybe it should be like the NBC from a few years ago. 5,3,1 or whatever it was for each place in each race to reward the top horse in the three races.  Maybe then some of the other horses would be encouraged to run all three races.  You would have some guys who, of course, realize they could not win the TC and would target just one or two of the races, like Tonalist or Medal Count, etc.  But it might make it more interesting.

I asked before and never saw an answer and haven't bothered to look it up.  Did those horses run against others targeting a specific race?  Or does anyone know off the top of their head?

Secretariat and Affirmed had 4 opponents. Seattle Slew 7

Smarty Jones had 8 opponents, CC war Emblem and Real Quiet all had 10 foes running against them

Obviously the 3 TC winners had much less formidable competition but I didn't check any of those 6 races for any newcomers

I'm sure the connections of these horses pointed toward the Belmont long before they knew there would be a TC on the line. I mean give it a rest, Commissioner was obviously bred with the Belmont in mind.

Anyone who takes part in a competition in which they already know the rules (rules that have  been the same for a very long time), then loses said competition and then girl/cries about they way things are ran is a sore loser/cry baby. Coburn had ZERO points in either of his interviews. I like the crying apology, that's my favorite!

If CC ever comes back east for anything this year, he won't win. But I have a feeling he'll be staying in Cali.

So you see facing new shooters with a TC bid on the line is nothing new, rules won't change nor should they.
