Facebook

Question about this thing.  How long do you guys think it will last?  It's going to IPO in a few years?  This thing is just a social fad....it's going to phase out just like MySpace did.  Right now it's bringing in lots of dough with all the advertising and apps, and people are treating it like it's real life..which is sad.  Would anyone consider investing in it?  Would anyone consider buying a Facebook app that would be making money just like Zynga Poker?  I don't think Facebook will last.

When  Google went public, I thought it was a bad investment.... so what the hell do I know..

I always ask myself what makes the company special.  Do they sell something proprietary, or make it difficult for someone to duplicate what they are doing..  In Google's instance, I wrongly assumed that Microsoft or Yahooo, or someone else would build a "better"  mousetrap (i.e. search engine).   .... that never materialized.  "Better" the operative word.

So, can someone else build another social networking site as good as Facebook.  Do they have a huge,  loyal following it seems, so that be difficult for people to steer away from.   

Will they make their money by charging subscribers, or charging advertisers.. I don't know..

facebook is not going anywhere. (or at least for the next 20 years.) with that, it will continue to be free and they will continue to get rich off the advertising. if it aint broke dont fix it. facebook is treated w serious hostility from users when they change how the site operates or its appearances but its the industry standard.. linkedin maybe a distant 2nd for networking. i joined right when it started in 2002 and dont use it that much anymore, would never pay for it n think most would not, but 

BigBadBlove If they start charging a monthly fee, then I could see them losing users for sure.  And the rumor is still out there that they will start charging a fee.  Greed will be the engine for the downfall.

i dont see facebook loosing either for a while. i would try to get in on the ipo if i could. more and more people are joining everyday even thou i like myspace better facebook is like the grownup version of it and it will continue to get bigger as time goes on

If facebook charged a monthly fee they would lose a lot of users for sure... I wouldn't pay $1 a month for facebook

And the next best move for Zuckerberg was to make a movie about his accomplishment.  The movie is gonna be terrible, but it seems like great timing and its just another way to promote his site.

The site doesn't need promotion anymore... reports show that 86% of the world can identify Facebook, surpassing McDonalds but still behind Coca-Cola.

As for the company itself, it's literally becoming entrenched in more things we do everyday. Soon, Facebook will become like a virtual passport. May seem far off now but just wait!

5 years ago, myspace was all the rage, now no-one barely goes there, there have been issues with privacy concerns and hacking, who's to say something better doesnt come along soon

As human nature goes,so will facebook! Another,joker will come up with a more exciting out-let, for those to communicate.

Agreed.  However, until they do charge a fee, I think it will continue to excel.  People have this linked directly to their cell phones.  They're not going to want to change - people by nature are creatures of habit...so they're not going to want a new service. 

That being said,  FB is a buy - even if it's a short term buy, and make a quick buck and get out.

Question...Would facebook only go IPO when it starts to charge a fee for membership? Or could they go IPO and still not charge a fee?

I think Facebook hasn't reached its peak yet so it will be around for a little while, but I'm not sleeping on the giants over at Microsoft, Google, or Yahoo. I know Google is currently stacking their chips to make a run at Facebooks reign over social networking. They've been making moves, so something is on the rise, and I expect Microsoft and Yahoo to make their own stabs as well.

facebook will never charge a fee. i dont even know where to begin with the logic behind thinking they will. it's like being worried that google would charge a fee. it makes no fucking sense for them

imo, facebook's demise will come soon when people start to realize how terrible it is to have all your information including your pictures and private shit you don't want people seeing on the internet.  more and more there are cyber bullying and people killing themselvs from leaking pics/videos people dont want out there...also ppl are guna start realizing that job recruiters look at facebook also so it can further damage your rep.

facebook also fucks up ur girl situation if your gettn with a few girls at once, any one of them can jus check ur facebook and ther might be a picture or some other girl commenting n ur fucked.  some of my friends alredy deactivated for that reason

facebook isnt' going anywhere cause the average person doesnt think about shit like that, but once people start to realize all the above points i made you'll see facebook participation drop.  It will be gradual tho, prob over the next 3-5 years....just my .02

btw haven't seen the movie yet, but it does look pretty good

Nobody's info is safe anywhere.  Why would people think its different with facebook?  facebook has enough info on you to sell to buyers.

This stuff turns over every 5-8 years. Every 5 years a new crop of 13 yr olds will want something new. MySpace got replaced by Facebook, FB will get replaced.

Facebook might die very slowly tho'. All the 30-60 yr olds that have it will probably stay with it for awhile out of habit until "the new one" becomes a cultural phenomenon like Facebook did.

MySpace was all the rage, now it's almost a joke. These social networks are like clothing style, every 5-8 yrs something new comes along.

MySpace is still very popular for music. A lot of bands still use it to promote their music. 

Facebook is very popular with young people at an addictive level.
