If GM were to file for bankruptcy on Monday will this have any impact on the market or is this news already "baked in". We've run up the last two days on little to no volume and I wonder if it was a set up before laying the boom Monday with the GM bankruptcy filing.
I am thinking it will have no impact just because EVERYONE THINKS it will have an impact. Say they don't file . . . do the markets then rally?
Here is what I don't get and maybe you can explain to me. When Lehman and Bear were about to fail that sent the markets into an absolute tailspin. Why would the same not happen with GM filing for bankruptcy. Could GM filing for bankruptcy kind of be like the airlines doing the same thing in the early 2000's?
I am at a loss as to what to expect. Seems we are starting to come up on some resistance on the S&P and DOW but with this market who knows.

Lehman and Bear were the start of the financial chaos, and it implied that HUGE companies were vulnerable to falling and that ANY bank or financial company could tumble, so it sent much greater shock waves than what GM ever could.
Also, F is going to make it, Chrystler is private and Toyota and Honda are doing fine..so no either way I dont think it effects the markets at all.
I think the summer we see a swoon, only to buy them back in the fall.

government will do everything they can to save the UAW
this will not fail...government will continue to pump as much money as possible into Government Motors to ensure they make their 50mpg green energy shit boxes which they'll mandate you use in a few years after carbon taxing has put you in the poor house

They didn't give up hardly anything, same deal as the Chrysler employees. No overtime until you work 40 hours, gave up Easter Monday vacation day, and a couple of other things. No material reduction to wages which are so much higher than their counterparts at the foreign automakers.
Besides, they actually have no choice. In bankruptcy, without agreeing to something they are at the mercy of the court where management drives the process. They actually are protecting themselves by doing this, the last thing they want is to be in bankruptcy with management asking the judge to reject and renegotiate their contracts.
As far as GM is away from profitability, this wasn't enough, and it's a shame the way this one group which is a drain on profitability is getting preferential treatment.
We should've just shut the company down and given each UAW worker half a million bucks, because that's about what it's costing taxpayers to save their jobs.

Well the pension issue is probably larger than the current employees and matters as much to the country as workers getting paid..there are a ton of retired employees sucking off GM.

Absolutely agree with the last statement. The UAW has been lethal for car companies (of course, so has their idiotic management) and I would have much rather just bought them all off for what they are, glorified welfare recipients...seeing this staggeringly stupid and arrogant company, from the top down, be propped up is absolutely nauseating.
