    Depeche,

It isnt a mystery that Buffett knows the tax code and pays very little taxes on a personal level. If he were to pay taxes on the level that mid wage earners do, can you imagine how much he would be paying?

No fault of his, rather a fault of the code, but it isnt a myth that he knows how to get around paying taxes.

Thanks for the links Koaj..I think Jimmy is a bit off his rocker and has been saying these same things for a decade, as long as I have known him (from TV) but he is finally getting his time in the sun and it is well deserved..unlike some TV faces, Jimmy is a straight shooter and isnt a schmuck like some..(Cramerica for one)

The fat dividends are nice to have in choppy waters like this year will likely bring, and I think the companies can pass the increasing prices of energy (i.e. coal) to their customers (bottom line remains relatively stable).

These are just my thoughts on what vermeer and wsc brought up above. Thx again, guys, for sharing your thoughts.

go check the price of milk and bread

it is a problem but the govt wont admit it b/c they would have to up their real dollar payments in entitlement programs b/c of cost of living increases

like i said...with SCG even if the stock sells off a bit it still yields more than the 30yr which is probably why you buy a utility anyway...not for the growth potential...when the stock goes up the yield lessens making the company expensive

    Wall,

LEH is certainly shitting the bed right now.  I wish i hung on to everything else.  I realized 26% on my other options, and i have some april $50 puts that i'm up 130% on right now.  If i had held onto everything, i'd be up over 200%.  either way, i'm more than pleased.

    Vermeer,
I am still long SKF.  but i sold some last week to buy more SRS, which i like longer term.  But i expect both of them to hit their highs of the third week of january, again.  I also bought some QID this morning, after seeing the chart in this post.

That's just because dividends are taxed at a lower level, capital gains are not taxed until sold and charitable contributions are deductible.  I don't think he does anything special at all to get around taxes.  It's just that the code favors earnings from dividends and capital gains and allows charitable deductions.  Doesn't take any special planning.  I guess you could say that giving stuff away to charity is a way to get around taxes, but that seems like an odd way to think of it.

The more studies done on dividends the better the case for them as well, so not just in choppy markets....I love em myself. Will look at SCG  Koaj, as the glance I took at it looked nice, real nice.

The more studies done on dividends the better the case for them as well, so not just in choppy markets....I love em myself. Will look at SCG  Koaj, as the glance I took at it looked nice, real nice.

fyi - if obama gets elected, look for shareholders to push companies to put their spare cash (dividends) back into r&d and expansion as opposed to giving me (shareholder) a tax liability above the normal dividend rate

    And another commentary :

Self-interested commentators abound, particularly among Wall Street and hedge fund denizens, who are itching for the Federal Reserve and Congress to bail them out (or to provide the means by which they can make the U.S. taxpayer, kind of like those opportunists around the S&L bailout two decades ago). And all too many economists are making the same pronouncements, encouraging the continued reduction in short-term rates to "unlock" the credit markets.

Further, we continue to witness a U.S. citizenry who has little tolerance for pain, U.S. legislators who have little tolerance for declines in their popularity ratings, and an Executive branch that refuses to make the hard, long-term decisions that may be unpopular but get the U.S. on the road to fiscal prudence. It is a sickening game to be watching from the sidelines and one which I am sure my fellow pragmatists can relate to.

If unlocking the credit markets were the only thing we had to worry about. There is plenty of liquidity out there; it is only that few are willing to part with it while market conditions are so uncertain. When can we expect to see the last of the portfolio write-downs (CDOs, CBOs, leveraged loans and loan commitments, residential and commercial real estate loans, and so on) held by our banks, investment banks and insurance companies? It was once $100 billion, then $200 billion, now $400-$600 billion. Let's call it a trillion. And the problem is that as these losses are announced quarter after quarter, it casts a pall over the entire market, delaying the healing process.

I guarantee you that more (sustainable) fortunes are made in times like these than in boom times, as it takes a certain inner strength and steely resolve to wait until maximum pain is being experienced and then to swoop in and pick up the assets at fire-sale prices. But we're not there yet. Many, if not most economists see a pick-up in the second half of 2008; I'll wager that 2009 is even worse than 2008 for the overall market

Value investor Martin Whitman increased his stake in MBIA Inc. to 10 percent, saying the world's largest bond insurer will be able to keep its AAA rating and resume writing new policies.

Whitman, who has spent more than 50 years profiting from undervalued stocks, said his flagship mutual fund at Third Avenue Management LLC bought 10.6 million MBIA common shares at $12.15 each in February, according to a letter to shareholders.

The 83-year-old investor said MBIA is being ``victimized'' by short seller William Ackman and called the ratings companies' assessments of bond insurers ``arbitrary and capricious.'' The $2.6 billion in capital MBIA has raised in stock and note sales since December means the company deserves to keep its AAA rating and talks of a bailout are misplaced, Whitman said.

i couldn't resist selling some of my LEH puts this morning.  52 week low was too tempting.  I made 188%.

I sold some SKF above $130 as well, just too tempting.

It's a bloodbath out there this morning.

I believe the bloodbath will continue.

People I know have done one of two things, turned everything into cash, or have cashed out and placed some serious jack in ultrashorts, with the occasional gold bug buying big, expecting another double in two years.

One guy I respect told me last night "I am shorting the US, especially with a  Democrat in the White House, no matter who it is.And there will be one." He feels the Dow will be 8,000-9,000 this time next year. (Hell as gloomy as he was, he should pull a Jim Rogers and leave the country!!)

If Obama wins, I could see that happening.

Selling is wide spread even with companies with STRONG earnings and low PE ratios..

It is obvious to me that the bigger players are shorting this market regardless of stock, price, sector etc.

The only stocks up are either being bought out or had great earnings or news..that lasts a day and back to selling again.

THIS action reminds me of 2002..every day selling..sell sell sell..

That's why i think that MON will die eventually.  all the AG and Basics that have run up in this bear market, will be a source of funds, when all else breaks down.  I'm long SMN and waiting for that to happen.

MON and MOS and those type stocks have demographics on their side as well though...it is extremely hard to get a grasp of the size of the demand that is brewing in India and Asia. The only question is will a major downturn in American fortunes attenuate that demand to such a degree that it will lessen the tide. But the demographic picture is truly staggering.

I've got a little "startup" money to play with... would you guys suggest waiting this out? (this past week was killer)

If not, what are some recommendations for the top 3 stocks?

    Just curious

Wall I questioned him about whether or not Clinton or Obama made any difference and his position was definitely not.Neither in his opinion have any realistic approach to solving the major economic problems facing the country, and he has been amazed and well, horrified at their (to him)  bizarre responses to press questions regarding the housing/financial meltdown.
I have not followed the platforms offered up by either, as they are merely devices in order to get elected, and will not be enacted in reality in any case, so I can't make much of any discrepancies between them.
What about Obama's platform makes you feel as you do? Just curious.

    This is why..

I think Clinton might be perceived as market friendly more than Obama because of her husband and experience being in the oval office, and Obama is more left left than Clinton.

It really doesnt matter about her, she isnt winning..even if she wins the DEM nomination, she isnt winning.

I think either Democratic candidate will win. She will bring out more people who detest her husband, surely, but she will still win. The public has had it with Repubs, and when the pub gets like that, they vote absolutely anyone into office from the other party, no matter what ilk of person he or she may be.We voted for Nixon (twice) Clinton(twice) so any scumbag can get elected if the timing is right
