mwhit82.... don't forget, the world doesn't revolve around the U.S. Sure, we might have our own agenda getting off foreign oil, but do you really think developing economies (India, China particularly) are weening themselves off oil? Think again.
Long story short, whatever amount of foreign oil we decrease.. those developing countries will more than make up for. So, oil consumption only increases on a global level.... long term
That being said, there will be a place for Natural Gas in this nation's future. It makes too much sense not to, and the Gulf Disaster will only make the push that much more serious. BTW, big oil is well positioned for Nat. Gas.
Witness Exxon's buy-out of XTO Energy earlier in the Year, and other big oil companies buying stakes in big Nat. Gas Projects. Chesapeake (CHK) has quite a few deals with the majors, and is a big Nat. Gas player.

I disagree w/ the fact that demand universally will increase if the US decreases. China NO!!! They cannot sustain on the price of oil, and their gov't sure as fuck doesn't mind telling their scientists to discover something profitable for their gov't, I truly think they are just waiting to STEAL whatever the US decides as a long term strategy and using it against the US, just business. China gets only 5% of their oil from OPEC so they already are cutting it off.
Now maybe these oil companies transform into other energies, but to think they can dominate the market in all forms seems a bit short-sighted.

Do a little googling on "china oil assets" to see how China is locking up OIL ASSETS around the world. They are willing to make deals with anyone to keep their economic engine rolling... and they have lots of room for growth... Don't overthink this mWhite... it's oil they're after !!
And to your last point, no one said big oil would dominate the market in all energy forms.. They are just in good position for fossil fuels that will continue to dominate our future for years to come... Oil & Nat. Gas.
