We had a great competition last year, some good entries, will fish up that thread and see how everyone did.
For this year, pick ONE stock you either like long or short, post the stock and the price at the time of the post. Deadline is Jan 2, 2009 by market close.
A change this year, you can either sell the position OR buy to cover at any time during the year via posting in the thread, but you only get one play for the year.
Winner of the contest will receive a gift related item in December 2009 from me.

Las Vegas Sands (LVS - nyse) @ $5.90 @ 12:32 est wednesday 12-31.
LVS is a real "shit house or castle" play in gaming BUT I think the industry will recover quicker than the overall economy in 2009 and LVS, even though they are WAY over leveraged and recently diluted the hell out of their stock, has the internatonal operations to either recover huge OR become an acquisition
others in the sector I considered, and would buy in IF not limited to just one stock, are International Game Technology (IGT - nyse) @ $11.65,Gigamedia (GIGM - nasdaq) @ $5.50 and CryptoLogic Limited (CRYP - nasdaq) @ $2.30

I doubt that it will do as well as my EFUT short last year though.
a SHORT with only 3.365 million shares out? WAY too easy to get run in.
DPTR at 4.60
I like your thinking here. I doubt that crude stays down around the $40 range long IF there is some even minor economic recovery ALTHOUGH the OPECers and The Five Families oil companies MAY have learned a lesson from last summer where their excessive greed "killed the goose". I think much of the downturn was directly related to those insain oil prices back then.
also like Delta Pete's almost 13% SHORT position. you could get a "scare da bear" move.
in retro, we ALL missed the play on FRPT back in late October when it went down to the $1.70 area or even mid November when it dipped again to around &2.30. been on a pretty steady up move ever since and hit $6 today (12-31).

Thought about going with DXO in this contest but I recently learned I am not allowed to invest in it in real life, so I'm gonna go with something I actually invested in and that could hopefully make me some money.

GG Goldcorp: 31.60 at current price. Still alot of gaps under this price so I do expect GG to go down from this current price before going higher. Anyone that follows technicals can see this is getting over bought an the dailies. Slo Sto, RSI, and MACD. Weeklies look great.
I think the precious metals sector will outperform again this year. There is so much liquidity being pumped into the market (hyper inflation) the dollar will get smashed which will only drive gold higher.
Two other sectors I like are energy and materials.
FWIW I like SLW, AZK, ABX, GLD, GOLD, and FCX these are all precious metals.
ACH, FCX, PCU, SWN, FSLR, PQ, LUFK, DIG, DXO. These are energy and materials.
sasquatches1 love your DXO pick. I got it at 2.06 last week. Up today 20 %. Good job...

Glad to see this extended.I have been too damn busy (re reading as is my yearly wont the classic econ books, and really enjoying the Reminiscences more this year than ever)..
If there were such a thing, I would buy a put on the American Empire. But, there is no such thing that I know of.

Short the USA, or get long puts on "The American Empire"..........sign me up NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, and wait a few years when Social "Security" goes caput. Imagine just having back that 6.2% yearly reaming right now?
Maybe the smartest thing I have ever done in my sorry ass life was this same day last year liquidating everything I had (real estate, 401s, IRAs, stocks, etc) and assuming the penalties/taxes for 2009. Even with the taxes and penalties, I STILL came out way ahead than had I just "stayed the course."
What a farking joke is this whole country.
