If you are going to watch sports, I wouldn't recommend Aria. It's a nice place, but the sports book is very small. Why would you go back and forth from where you are staying to go to the LVH?? Yes, the LVH is a great because of their sports book, but the hassle of going back and forth isn't worth it; from driving or even more so of taking a cab. You might as well stay there, until you move into nicer digs when your friend arrives. If you are looking for a nice place, which is inexpensive, I recommend South Point. It's cheap, clean, the sports book is nice and spacious, they give you drink tickets for your plays, the staff is nice, and it's 10 minutes south of The Strip.
For when your friend arrives, I recommend Mandalay Bay. They have a huge sportsbook, which has a lot of room/seating. During the day, you could hit their beach and chill out. For nightlife, they just opened their new nightclub, and they also have their day/night beach club. They have a nice selection of restaurants, and for a buffet, their buffet is decent. You could always venture out and hit a club at night, if you wanted. They did renovate it, and The Hotel(inside MB, just an upscale option) will be completely renovated, but I think that will be in October.
You didn't state your age, but I wouldn't recommend Wynn. It's very nice(the only 5 diamond hotel in Vegas), but that's where the older clientele/money hang out. Sports book there is decent, but like I said, older clientele.
The Cosmopolitan is very nice. Tons of 20 somethings to early 30's hang out there. Nice nightclub(Marquee) there, with lots of eye candy. But the sports book is small, much like Aria.
Are you guys going to hit the strip joints too? What is your age?

The Rio is not a dump.Sure it's not the Wynn or Pallazo where the rooms are sweet w/ electronic curtains and sunken living room area..But if you want a room with some space with a fridge and room safe good luck w/that at the Palms coming in off the street...Stayed there comped one night-small behind room and you could hear noise from adjoining room (Drunk kids one night,no need for the scheduled 5am wake-up call for airport departure)
Have stayed at the Rio going on 13 years every Sept for NFL opening, never a problem.Sportsbook is decent and bigger than the Palms and drink tickets a lot easier to get...

Good for you man. But if that's you in the pic, you don't use the facilities mentioned. Stop disecting everything Mr. Vegas. The Aria hotel can easily run $200 plus a night. He's sleeping in a room with a bunch of jocks; how quiet you want it to be?
