Just spent a week at The Venetian to play Poker and bet sports. I have had mostly good experiences with them before. But this trip I could see how much the Sportsbook has deteriorated over the last couple years. Here is the comment I left on the "How was your stay" survey they just sent me.
"This was definitely the worst part of my stay and probably why I will never stay at your hotel again. First of all, the staff’s attitude is indifferent at best. They rarely say thank you or good luck, and when I say thanks after they give me my ticket I rarely get a response. Secondly, the way they display the lines for sports sucks. It is disorganized, and the lines are rarely accurate. It seems like there is a 15 to 30 min lag when line changes get on the board. So frequently when you go make a bet, the line will be different then what you saw on the board. Third, for the Nov 2 college football games, the system was broke and they didn’t offer halftime lines. I find this unacceptable for a major sportsbook and is actually the second time I have seen this happen at the Venation. Finally, they never have enough people working the counters during the busy times on football days (halftime, in between games, etc.). Several times the line starched from the counter all the way around to the casino floor by the Asian Noodle restaurant. A lot of the times only one person would be working the counter when the line was this long. What is worse, is that there would be 2 or 3 people milling around behind the guy at the counter doing god knows what, but showing no concern about the line or serving people. It got so bad at times that people in line started heckling the staff. Several time if I wanted to get a bet in on time, I had to literally run over to the Palazzo and use the sportsbook stand there. I realize that the sportsbook is a low priority for most casinos considering the money it brings in compared to other games. But I know casinos still have it to bring in guests to stay at their hotels who will hopefully play other games such as the slots, poker, or table games. I am that prime example. Unfortunately, due to the horrible experience I had at your sportsbook, I will be staying at Aria during my three times a year Vegas visits. "

i was there 3 years ago for the steelers/packers superbowl and had a great time. the next year we went, cantor took over the book and it sucked in regards to service to the whole setup. i was putting down 1-2k bets on games and asked for some drink tickets. they told me to go ask the guy in charge,he took down my ticket # and gave me 1 drink per $500 bet. so play 2k and get 4 drink tickets. i dont really care about the drink tickets, but wasting my time to talk to him and him thinking he is doing me a favor for giving me tickets is a joke. anyways, we moved on and have been staying at other places . nice rooms, but a true joke in the book.

Long story to share but lets just say I am no longer "allowed" in the sports book at the Venetian Hotel and Casino ....... for something that was 1000% nothing but their fault on posting a bad line. Hope rest of your trip went well.

Aria an awesome hotel but their sportsbook ain't all that great either.
Mostly miserable and indifferent ticket writers, the boards are a couple of hard to read tv screens out of sight of the seating area. The amount of seats for a hotel that large is a joke, and the room is a weird shape making it virtually impossible to follow more than a couple of games at a time.
The lines can be long but they do move. Give me the Wynn sportsbook any day.

i'm in vegas now and was surprised at bally's if you make a teaser bet on a football game - they don't give you 6 points on an over/under- they give you 4.

Cantor's service and products are not very good and are in need of much improvement. However, it's not always the writers fault as to why the wait in line is always long. Think of how many people, after waiting 15 minutes to a half hour in that line, get up to the window and have no concept of what a betting number is or have never bet sports before and therefore have no idea of what they're doing. They ask any number of stupid questions then place a $10 bet on their favorite team or a 6 team parlay that has no shot at hitting.
Not making excuses for the writers as their attitudes, most of the time, are indifferent at best and sometimes downright poor. I understand why though, I wouldn't want to explain what a point spread, total, or money line is to some rookie while a hand full of veterans give dirty looks to people. I especially wouldn't want to explain different bets to people 20 different times a day.
Another reason for the long wait is that Cantor wants you to create an account for betting for the weekend. Their ultimate goal is to have everyone on account and keep a minimal amount of writers on staff. This eliminates certain costs and helps keep track of certain bettors. Not necessarily to prevent winners per se but more for compliance purposes. I don't personally ever think they will be able to completely eliminate writers, especially given the poor reviews for their in game mobile products. But that is part of their motive.

It wasn't all that long ago that the Imperial Palace (obviously now the Quad) had a dry erase board....during March Madness. There aren't many excuses for lines to be off but that dry erase board was absolutely brutal and frequently 2 points off in what were expected to be close NCAAB games.

I agree with you and completely understand where you're coming from. I'm just informing you what their intentions and motives are. Most people, especially those living outside of Nevada, don't want anything to do with creating an account and it's completely understandable. They want to put as many people on accounts as possible and turn the people behind the counter into bank tellers with as few of them being there as possible. It's for the purpose of limiting wages and over head. Personally, I don't think they will ever be able to completely get rid of writers or get a majority of bettors on account, especially at a place like Palazzo/Venetian where almost everyone is a tourist from outside of Nevada.
As far as waiting in line goes, please keep in mind that it isn't always the writers fault or a lack of people behind the counter. Ideally, everyone would come up with their bet numbers and wager amounts ready....wouldn't that be nice. You probably have no idea how many people come up to the window and utter the phrase "I've never done this before and I have no idea what I'm doing" or "Can you explain the different wagers to me" while holding an NFL and NBA sheet. Not saying more writers wouldn't expedite things a few of them have to explain things that people should research before showing up at the window. Now imagine explaining what a money line, point spread, and total are to people 20 different times in a shift and you can start to get an idea of a) why the line moves slower than it probably should and b) why you might catch a writer in a not so friendly mood. Especially when you know those people are going to bet, at most, $20 on a game.

We have about 6k in cash on us at time so we plunk the 6k down 13.5 raise another 6k before Saturday kickoff and play at Caesar's for the 3.5 leaving us a 10 point middle. Game final is 9 point spread we hit both sides. Go to cage at Venetian on Saturday night to cash ticket and clerk at window smiles at us picks up phone and says and I quote "Mr. 13.5 is here" Manager comes out and explains we aren't getting paid and offers us a refund on the ticket and some buffet comps. I swear the buffet comps part is 100% true. We argue for a little bit to no avail so we call the gaming commission. They come down on Sunday afternoon and speak with same manager and advise him unless the casino can prove they refunded everyones money that may have played the other side of the incorrect line he must pay our ticket. Well obviously the casino can't do because as the casino manager pointed out they would gladly refund the money but they don't have those folks contact information. This is where the story gets good.......the gaming commission forces him to pay the ticket we take our cash and head up to our room. Roughly 30 mins later there is a knock at the door and it is a very nice and professional security manager letting us know we need to pack our bags because we are being asked to leave the hotel. He let's us know he is fully aware of the situation and can't believe they are kicking us out but politely asks us to leave. Additionally on the way out we are informed our action was no longer welcome in the casino or in the sports book. Can you believe the stupidity of management and the casino. Let us get our pockets fat on the football game and could see we were playing $25 craps and $100 blackjack all week then kicked us out of the hotel without taking a shot at the fact we were probably going to take that money and head right back down to the tables.

I really think the South Point is the best book for making wagers in Vegas. Lines/odds are almost always accurate and updated in a timely manner, waiting time is never too bad, usually a healthy amount of windows open leading up to kick off, drink tickets for as little as $20 wager (probably even less if you're willing to throw the writer a tip), and they're starting up their mobile service which is nice for locals.
Jimmy Vacaro recently took it over and seems to be doing a great job with it. He is on local radio all the time giving interviews and telling everyone what is going on with the book. It's a dump to watch games in but a great spot to make a bet. If they ever re-did the book and put in better tv's and seating it would be a great experience.

The comments about Cantor are right on too. My experience with them is at the M. For CFB Saturday, the book opens an hour before the kickoff of the first game. Customer service there is the worse in the city and the cocktail waitresses don't even come through the book anymore even if you have money in your hands...forget about getting any drink ticket for any sports wager.
They are driving business to their online site which is why they are so poorly staffed. What a stupid business decision as the level of activity in the book on a football day is now not much better than the poker room next door...which they have now closed.
A pity really as we will end up with about three to four operators with no ability to shop a line or get a comp. Why talk yourself into spending a day there versus using the offshores in your own relaxing environment.
Palms is no better as on Sundays every spot in the book is reserved except for three (another Cantor debacle).
I really think the South Point is the best book for making wagers in Vegas. Lines/odds are almost always accurate and updated in a timely manner, waiting time is never too bad, usually a healthy amount of windows open leading up to kick off, drink tickets for as little as $20 wager (probably even less if you're willing to throw the writer a tip), and they're starting up their mobile service which is nice for locals.
Jimmy Vacaro recently took it over and seems to be doing a great job with it. He is on local radio all the time giving interviews and telling everyone what is going on with the book.
