Luiz Dutra (+110) v. Tom Breese (-150)
Dutra is coming off a loss by DQ in his UFC Debut for a series of illegal elbows while Kiichi Kunimoto was fighting for a takedown. He was performing moderately well until then, keeping up in strikes with Kunimoto and stuffing his first takedown attempt. This fight marked his return from a 21 month layoff.
Breese is coming off a R3 Win by submission in Cage Warriors 74, which was his pro return after a 2 year layoff. He looked fantastic in both striking and grappling, stuffing several takedown attempts and landing several of his own. He nearly finished in both the 1st & 2nd rounds, but his opponent was saved by the bill. He showed incredible BJJ acumen when he trapped his opponent’s arm with his body triangle, allowing him to easily finish by rear naked choke. He is undefeated at 7-0 and won 6 by submission. He also won 5 of his 7 amateur wins by submission.
Tom Breese is superior in both striking and grappling and should win easily. He also holds height and reach advantage. He is the younger fighter at 23 against Dutra at 33. The only angle working against Breese is that in his UFC debut, he is traveling from England to a hostile Brazil.
The Prediction: Tom Breese (Submission)
My Bet: Tom Breese (-150)
Juliana Lima (-210) v. Ericka Almeida (+175)
Juliana is coming off a decision win over Nina Ansaroff in which she neutralized the striker with her grappling skills. The win wasn’t too impressive. She was able to maintain ground control, though was nearly caught with a couple of submissions. She was unsuccessful with her own heel hook attempt as well. She essentially won the fight by laying on top- as Nina Ansaroff outstruck her and was closer with her unsuccessful submission attempts. In her previous bout, she was heavily out struck by now-champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk.
Ericka Almeida is taking this fight on short notice, filling in for Jessica Penne. She is making her UFC debut in this fight after winning and defending the Jungle Fight 115 championship. She is a BJJ brown belt that looks like a black belt. She holds an undefeated 7-0 record with an impressive 6 submissions & 1 TKO. Her last fight (04/11/2015) was an incredible first round win. She showed impressive striking from the clinch, throwing a series of head-knees before taking the fight to the ground. She landed some vicious ground & pound from side control, transitioned to the mount & rolled into a perfect Triangle Choke to win by submission.
I am so-effing-high on Ericka Almeida that I can’t contain myself. Lima has some BJJ training but is primarily a muay thai striker. However Almeida’s muay thai is just as good, evidenced in her last fight, and her BJJ skills are miles ahead. Lima was outstruck heavily in her UFC debut loss, and won her next fight through ground control when faced with another kickboxer. This will be the fight she wants to keep standing, but Almeida’s grappling is too good for that. Almeida is the younger fighter & more explosive of the two Brazilian ladies. Almeida will get her to the ground and can win easily from her guard, let alone from top control.
The Prediction: Ericka Almeida (Submission)
My Bet: Ericka Almeida wins by Submission / inside the distance
