Can’t say I remember Landrum, but Billy Williams was a TREMENDOUS player. Probably not as well known as Banks, but equally as talented.
Just read through JEG’s entire post about slave wages back then in MLB. As great as a reliever that Elroy Face was, he had a job in the off-season as a carpenter with Mayview State Hospital, just outside of Pittsburgh. Rumor had it he made more doing that than playing MLB. I also remember Richie Hebner digging graves in the off-season with his father, hence the nickname “Digger”. Now, we have players who need a day off after playing a night game followed by a Day game. It’s tough work standing around in the outfield for a few hours, especially if you were expected to spend an hour in the cage prior to the game. God forbid....

No Shit LC,can you believe that,a day off because they played the night before,as a kid we would play all day,and if you made the traveling All Stars which I did a few times,I would pitch 7 innings and then on Sat.or Sun. I would pitch 3 more innings because you could only pitch 10 innings, then I would go play right field for rest of game. These primadonna's now are unreal and instead of making 5,000 a year they get that for one pitch.

Work in the off season? They all did. Mickey Mantle owned a bowling alley, for God's sake, and actually had to work there in the off season (drinking time curtailed). A GREAT catcher, Roy Campanella, had his career ended by an auto accident in the off season, driving to his dry cleaning store on Long Island in the early morning hours. Those guys had to provide for their future, they didn't have it banked at the age of 25. Tommy Lasorda said he once got a small raise and Branch Rickey told him not to discuss it with anyone because he was one of very few that got a raise that year. He said he told Rickey, "Heck no, Mr. Rickey, I'm just as ashamed of what you pay me as you are". I don't criticize today's player for taking the money, because what is really to blame was the reserve clause, binding a player to a team for life. If not slavery, it was at least indentured servitude, and thank God that day is gone. Players getting time off for a sore pinkie or because they played last night is also a concept management has of "protecting their investment." Insufferably IRONic.
If you are not going to utilize your investment, why did you make it?

possibly. Just means they are all in on winning now

Dunning can pitch. Great move by the Rangers. They don't need a 33 year old innings eater in Lynn.
Dunning's SO/BB ratio last year 10.33. That's incredible for a rookie. At 6'4 225, he's a presence on the mound and he's not afraid to throw strikes.
I understand what you're saying. They want to win now. But I could see Lynn slipping a little.
Good news for us, Dunning will get juicy plus odds being a Ranger now.

One word of caution sac. Dunning's K/BB ratio looks very good, but the advantage to a rookie year is that noone is familiar with him and there is no "book" to speak of. If he remains that aggressive throwing strikes some factors could change. I sort of like the Sox attitude "Let's go for it" and a 3.32 era and 1.06 whip @ 6.5 innings per start does not exactly spell "innings eater", more like "effective starter". He may have plenty left in the tank, maybe enough to bump the Sox up a notch or two.

@KeyElement
Mr Key,
For someone that is always talking about my posts I think you missed one,POST 125,I must have some decent ones as you copied mine to a T,and I also added in to sac story about Gentile and how it could make a difference what position you played and who was playing it in the Big Club,I assume you read sac's post with the link, now I know how he has so much info on season coming up,he has the low-down on all the sites, smart Kid.
But back to you and my post 125,it is called plagiarism what you did,
.

JEG, I fail to see the plagiarism angle, but I am impressed that you are not only are aware of the word plagiarism but can actually spell it. 'fess up now, did one of your daughters help you out? I suspect so, since your post also does not contain the usual overwhelming number of grammatical errors. Just a couple (she probably popped those in to lend authenticity). It is a good thing you know how to mix a decent drink and peddle hookers or I have no idea how you would earn your living. Being sac's helper on the beer truck would never cut it, since you are neither physically able nor would the company tolerate a guy that drinks more of the product than he delivers (even sac has a problem there). Anyway............
Actually, I came online to see if sac is enjoying that balmy (for Chicago) 34 degree day. Must feel like April or May came early. Pardon me while I take my hoodie off, too darn hot for that, it feels like a good spring training game day, here in Marvelous Maricopa County. Yep, good old Bubba is stretched out on the patio sunning himself. The other day I called him dumb, and he just stared at me with a look that said, "Hey, I've got food, water, shelter, love and the easiest guard dog job in history, and you pay for it all, so who you calling dumb?" I hate to admit it, but I think he has a point there.
Now then, on to the next insufferably IRONic topic.

It is time for a W.A.G. on College basketball. Northern Illinois +7
Noone on tis site is more critical of systems than I am, but this pick is based on a very simple system. There are actually three eligible teams tonight and the other two are Boston College +6.5, Cal Irvine +10
If I go 0-3 the system is dead, except for possibly reversing the criteria. After all, a system that picked 60% losers would have to be considered for fade. 3-0 would not be proof I am onto something but would be encouraging. At this point it is all for entertainment. Do not gamble except with extremely discretionary mad money. Might have a seriously handicapped play Friday.

Missed this post. NIU is up early.
DeKalb is one of the worst schools to travel to for other MAC teams. It's a LONG boring bus ride, and rarely do they fly as landing at O'hare or Midway and the time it takes to transfer from plane to bus and go to DeKalb sucks as it is. It's in the middle of nowhere Illinois. I'm about 45 minutes drive from that barren farmland. Had a fling that lived out there, cool Whiskey distillery out there too. Many a headaches in the morning but it was worth the drive.

I promise to not make any predictions on your Rangers this year. I squashed em pretty good last year.
