I wouldnt say Simon got hte job back.
Also Hernandez didnt pitch too awful last night.
First hitter - No doubt it was just awful. Four straight balls and
only the first one was close. He either wasn't loose or was
overthrowing or both.
2nd hitter - Hairston. Got up 0-2 on two good fastballs. Threw an 0-2
fastball that was about shoulder high and just off the outside corner.
Hairston was hacking. He hit a routine ground ball in the hole between
1st and 2nd. Lugo was pulled to 2nd and doesn't have great range so the
ball got into right field. It wasn't the pitch I would have thrown,
but it wasn't a bad pitch on 0-2. Honestly, Hairston had an awful at
bat and got very lucky. That could just as easily have been a pop up or
double play.
3rd hitter - Bunted, hard, just to DH's right. He falls to the left
when he releases the ball normally and he froze for just a second.
Still, he got to the ball in time, but the guy could run. DH rushed and
pulled Lugo off the bag. Why Lugo instead of Wiggy when the ball was
bunted to the 3rd base side? I'm not really sure.
4th hitter - DH struck him out TWICE. He took a 1-2 pitch that was a
strike that the umpire missed because it wasn't at the glove. He threw
three sliders to this guy including one that hung, but ultimately struck
him out on high heat.
5th hitter - Eckstein. He threw a nice fastball at knees on inside to
get ahead. He threw another good FB that was just barely fouled off.
On 0-2, he threw the one pitch I really don't understand in the inning.
It was a letter high fastball on the outside part of the plate. It was
a borderline strike and Eckstein just slapped it into right field.
That was clearly the time to bury the slider or bust him inside, but
don't let him slap a ball away. It was Wieters' call and DH didn't
shake him off. Just a really poor pitch selection.
6th hitter - He threw some nice sliders and fastballs to Gwynn. Gwynn
fouled off a 1-2 FB that was knee high on the outside corner. It was a
nice stay alive swing. The ground out was smoked (hardest hit ball of
the inning). It was on a slider that was up just a little, but honestly
he put a good swing on it.
last hitter - Adrian Gonzalez - We tried to tie him up with a first
pitch fastball on his hands. It was between the belt and letters and
had about two inches of the plate rather than right in the corner. He
is just a helluva hitter and he put a great swing on it. I wouldn't
have started him with that pitch, but I understand the rationale. Get
ahead or hope he swings and doesn't quite get there in time for a pop up
/ fly out. It didn't work.
DH didn't look bad to me with the exception of the first hitter. He was
throwing like he normally does in relief after that. What I mean was
that his location was inconsistent but his stuff was very good. I
wonder if he got fully loose before the first hitter. We rallied very
late in the top of the 9th so he didn't get a lot of time.
Also this is hte first time Hernandez pitched back home. So he might have had some nerves.
