the low strike out teams are winning world series so the league will follow in due time. old baseball was way better tho theyre ruining it. americas favorite past time shouldnt have time limits!!

weather has played a huge factor already  this yr but its about money and players know long ball = payday.   

theres no reason to take 5 minutes between pitches- get in the box n play

managers bringing in pitchers for one batter is annoying

pitchers unable to pitch 3 days in a row is a joke..starters throw 100 pitches but relievers get tired arms throwing an inning back to back days

I think the biggest factor is the umpires are calling so many pitches strikes that aren't. Instead of 2-1 it is a 1-2 count which puts hitters in at a huge disadvantage. I see his happening every night, both leagues. For example, last night Greinke repeatedly got strikes called on pitches 6 inches outside.

Look at the Indians. They have 5 players in the starting line up with a sub .200 BA! That is amazing, but it's not from lack of talent. It's the same line up that won 20 straight last year. Lindor, one of the best young players in the game, is hitting .245.

You are making a fallacious argument if you fault the high number of strikeouts solely on talent dearth. Not true, not true. Other factors are involved. What about bullpens usage? Better pitching? You are not taking an objective view of how the game has changed.

I've been following this game a long time too. The biggest change in the last 50 years is the numbers of Latin players in the game. Used to be, maybe there was one, maybe two Latin players on a roster, but today, line ups have 5-7 Latin players. MLB has become a game dominated by the Latin players, and they're not in the line up because they're Latin, they're there because they are better; they have a comparative physical advantage in playing baseball, quicker reflexes, better hand-eye coordination. They're also hungrier. If want to discuss how the the game has really changed, this would be it.

Just heard interview w steve Garvey said no one bunts the runner over anymore bc they to obsessed w the hr. Says teams get down couple runs and instead of trying to chip away get
a run here there by moving runners over or hitting running they swing for fences when runners on base.

Yes sir. Low strike out teams in this new age of sabermetrics are money.

The strikeout is the SUREST OUT in baseball, and there's no argument anyone can give me or anyone else about it. A strikeout is a completely dead plate appearance. Only under the rare occurrence of a catcher not securing the pitch can the batter reach 1st safely.

There's 27 outs in baseball. Good luck to those teams who are whiffing 30% or more of the time while "hoping" for that perfect swing to clear the fence.

Sure it will pad #'s and look good in the season, but come October it's the pitching, defense, and small ball knowledgeable teams who will be left standing and playing real baseball.

2009 Yankees, K%=15.7% #2

2008 Phillies, K%=17.8% #15

This year, in 2018 the Red Sox are currently #2 at 19.3% and have the best record in mlb. We'll see how far they get. The D'backs have the same record but 23rd at 24.8%

So in the last 10 years, the world series champ has been 14th or better in K% 8 times, 15th(league avg) once, below league avg only once. 5 times in the last 10 years those teams were in the top 5.

Coincidence?

I say put the damn ball in play, make the other team earn their outs.

The “pitching is terrific nowadays” ...My God, can the posters in here get anymore clueless? Check out ERAs, Einstein....BTW, I played this sport thru college ( with 2 teammates who had long major league careers) so I’m familiar with facing fastballs and sliders, but thanks for your input, Skippy.

Now pitching really has gotten sh!tty. I swear, a decent relief pitcher 20 years ago is a starter now. And the guys in the pen should be in double or triple A.

Say what u want but the man has a very good point, there aren’t just a handful of awful players on rosters, some of these teams more then half the team the players are awful. Pretty simple formula to win $ this yr don’t bet totals, too many way below average hitters getting steady at bats. Always bet a
Good pitcher over a decent lineup.

I’m thinking of bringing back the “If it wasn’t for HRs” thread... Both were much more interesting than what’s in here now.
