A "real contender" would be a team that is in the race until at least the start of September. That's my view as a contender.

The Yankees weren't contenders in 2008. They didn't even make the playoffs, nor were they really ever close. Sure if a team like the Twins come back down the stretch and make it to the playoffs they are contenders. But if they aren't in it in September and don't make the playoffs...how can you consider them contenders?
