I dont think Guthrie is that great. He out performs all his peripherals every single year. He should not be having the success he has had over the years and it it will eventually catch up with him. He is a good #3 but nothing more than that.

Angels needed the bat and needed to get Abreu into the DH spot. It addresses their need...is he worth the $80 million plus for 4 years? Not in the current market and based on his stats. In the end, it's about winning, it's not an apples to apples comparison but you never here Steinbrenner (or his son) complain about the outlay of cash. They traded away salary as well to offset some of the additional costs.
Here are the hardcore stats for Vernon: https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/wellsve01.shtml
Scroll down to see a relative comparison of his numbers to other players (comparable to Andre Dawson in relative terms based on appearances).
I am not trying to sugar coat this, I definitely think the Jays dumped a very difficult contract and even if the Angels win the WS I support this trade 100%, AA did a great job. However, I am trying to look at it from both perspectives, Vernon will work very hard to be ready for Spring training and he is certainly rejuvenated, often that is all a player needs.
If somehow the Angels sneak into a playoff spot he will have paid for himself. he is 32, not 37. I have never looked at him as a hard nosed Gamer, let's see how he does.

Guthrie wouldn't be a number 3 on a team with quality pitching, problem is the Orioles pitching staff hasn't had much depth for years, now with the younger arms coming up he will probably move back in the rotation as they come to dominance.

It was good to dump the salary but I wouldn't waste the extra money on Jose Bautista. He had one season that was exceptional. He really only is a 20-30HR hitter. I can bet he won't get close to 40HR ever again. I say save the money and try to sign Pujols next year if he doesn't sign a new contract this season.
