look at phil niekro's 1974 season and explain to me how he not only didn't win the cy young that year, but finished THIRD in the voting behind a relief pitcher (mike marshall), and a starter (andy messersmith) who won fewer games, pitched fewer innings, had fewer CGs and shutouts, walked more hitters, gave up more earned runs, had a higher ERA and WHIP, and gave up more HRs...

marshall and messersmith combined had 22 first-place votes...

niekro received one...

you won't hear me complaining if dickey wins but all the stats in the world don't alter the perception that the knuckler is a goofy pitch and somehow unworthy of validation or respect... right or wrong, that's the just the way it is...

and RA at this stage of his career couldn't carry niekro's jock strap
