Cease and Valdez both have ERAs north of 4.90, and the Padres’ bats are due. This total feels like a setup—I’m smashing the over……

Dylan Cease has bad numbers in his last 3 starts but that’s because he got completely lit up at silly Sutter Health Park in Sacramento. Meanwhile Framber Valdez is already doing this season what he did all of last season, which is following up a bad start with a much better one. He gave up 10 hits and 7 earned runs on Monday in St. Louis, so you can bet that tonight he’ll be locking the Padres down. I’m on under 7.5 -117 and under 4 -120 in the 1st 5. Equal amounts on both though I like the 1st 5 more.

BOL on your NBA action 

Luis Arraez is out of the game after crashing into Astros second baseman Mauricio Dubon who was covering 1st base for Christian Walker who ran in to field the grounder off the bat of Arraez. Arraez immediately collapsed and stayed down. He was taken away on a stretcher and was wearing a neck brace. 

Manny Machado is putting up a tough at-bat, but it’s costing him. He just fouled a second straight 3-2 pitch off the same foot and now HE’S down.

Framber Valdez can’t throw a pitch by anyone at the top of the Padres order. He just gave in to Machado and walked him after a 12-pitch at-bat.

And then the defense did Valdez no favors as Christian Walker fanned on the terrible bounced relay throw from Dubon. Instead of an inning-ending double play, Tatis, Jr. came around to score.

Xander Bogaerts then ripped the first pitch down the left field line for a double off the suspect Valdez. The now gimpy Machado had to be held at third. Oscar Gonzalez then bailed out the nervous and sweaty Framber Valdez by lifting a lazy fly to right that stranded a pair of Padres in scoring position. 

What a weird top of the 1st. Valdez must’ve been affected by both injury delays. 

Walker and Dubon didn’t mess up THAT inning ending double play in the top of the 2nd. They had 38-year old catcher Martin Maldonado running to 1st, so they had plenty of time to turn the 3-4-3.
