There's no tying in baseball. There's no clock, either. But when a downpour of rain and the threat of tornadoes tore through Denver on Thursday, baseball called timeout on the Rockies-Giants game at Coors Field.
The game remains tied 2-2.
But fear not, fans of a game that only ends with a winner. Colorado and San Francisco will resume the series finale Sept. 1 — making it one of the longest series in recent Rockies history.
Nearly five hours after Thursday's game started — and with Michael Cuddyer on first base and Troy Tulowitzki at bat with two out in the sixth inning — umpire crew chief Bill Miller signaled no-go.
"The field took a lot of water," Miller said in a statement. "It was going to take 45 minutes to get ready and another storm was forecast to hit in 30 minutes. Both managers agreed it was best to suspend the game."
The Rockies and Giants endured an 82-minute, fourth-inning thunderstorm delay that sent fans into the concourses. Ballpark officials briefly considered a plan to send people to the basement service levels while a tornado warning was in effect. The teams returned to play but couldn't get through a second delay, and the game was suspended at 6:07 p.m.
Overall, the Rockies and Giants waited through 166 minutes of delays before the game was suspended.
"It was some pretty nasty stuff," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said of the weather.
