i mean, cashman was on with franseca yesterday. the highlight of the preseason is that KEVIN YOUKILIS is hitting the ball well. that's great.
Now go to yankee stadium, pay $1000 for your ticket, sit there with your dumb yankee cap on, & root for KEVIN YOUKILIS, the slugger on your 2013 yankee offense.

Joba's stache is awful. They'd trade him if they could get ANYTHING for him but I doubt they can. He's not coming back next year. He's trying to be the comedy that they lost from Swisher. It's not working.

Yanks absolutely have a ton of question marks, more than most years but over the last 10 years they have always had question marks and found ways to make it to the playoffs every year except 08.
Andruw Jones, Raul Ibanez, Nick Swisher, and Russel Martin leaving subtracts 78 homes.
Then you factor in A-Rod, Tex, and Granderson injuries and they add up. But Andruw Jones and Raul Ibanez are not big losses at all, yes Ibanez had a bunch of big hits but that's only the last thing you remember. Swisher beats up on bad pitching and I think Ichiro not only gives them better defense than Swisher in right but also more balance to the line up and some speed and athleticism. Replacing Russel Martin is a bigger concern.
Curtis Granderson was assumed to be shifting to Left this year before the injury so as for what The Hawk said its not accurate, and Gardner has a pretty good arm, saying he has no arm is a wild assumption, and up to this point he has not been injury prone so I will count on him as the Yankees plan too.
What the Yankees are losing in home runs they are making up for with balance and speed, something they should of done years ago.
Between the bargain basement signings of Travis Hafner and Branden Bosch, I give Cashman a 50/50 chance of looking like a genuis, as he tends to do in the off season or around the trade deadline.
After CC there are more question marks. Pettitte is obviously old but I feel fine about him. Kuroda also old but also have no reason to expect him to not be as durable as he has in the past. Nova and especially Hughes have to reach a level of pitching maturity and consistency. God knows what the Yanks will get out of Pineda when he returns (probably the All-Star break if I can keep my fingers crossed that long). And David Phelps as a reliever/starter last year had a 1.19 whip and struck out 96 in 99 innings. So there's a possibility he could be a good 5th starter. Again, the last 10 years the pitching staff has always had question marks. In fact there used to be more question marks at pitching between when the dynasty ended in 01 and they signed CC before 09.
But the unsung hero is their bullpen. The bullpen's are always overlooked but that has been a constant for the Yankees since Girardi took over. Rivera, Robertson, Logan, Chamberlain, and maybe David Aardsma can bounce back from Tommy John surgery.
I realize I said maybe a lot, but as a Yankee fan I do at this point every year and the last time they had 87 or fewer wins was....actually 2000 when they won the world series. In 2008 though, when they finished 3rd in the division after a ton of injuries they still won 89 games. You have to go back to 95 to a season where they won under 80 (79).
Currently I see the line at 85 at 5Dimes. I like O85 +105.

Jeter is likely to start the season on the DL and Cashman said he won't be activated until he's capable of playing SS full-time. And Mariano has been dealing with migraines for a couple of weeks now.
But Ben Francisco hit 2 homers yesterday!!!

In the past , the Yanks would just go out an pay millions for replacements , but this Stienbrenner wants the money in his pocket . Yankee fans that said payroll doesn't matter will be calling for the managements head by seasons end. It could be a lot worse . you could be a Cubs fan

I don't think they would gamble on Vernon Wells at probably 4m a season if it was just about the money to them. They're right to get the payroll under control, in the process it will hopefully keep them from giving away 7 year deals.

Unless you consider what I previously said without spinning it. They are most likely paying 4 million dollars a season for someone who has been awful the past 2 years and hoping theres still something left in the tank. For a Yankee team concerned about lowering payroll, yes that is a gamble.

that vernon wells is getting signed, with the angels eating 29 million to do it, says everything that needs to be said about cashmans options right now. How do you fill holes when you got nothing to fill them with.
this season is all pitching & defense. the scoring is not going to be impressive. no need to write a book there. If the pitching can stay healthy & keep runs down in late innings, they will be in the running. nobody really stands out in the AL east this year.
But the other requirement for that pitching is a good defense. the outfield will chase down balls. but the interior defense is real sketchy looking. hopefully the catcher position will not be rookie class. nothing looks bad like past balls & stolen bases run amok.
most amazing is that the yankees are putting up worse numbers then the marlins this preseason. one must believe the surprise for the yanks will be on the upside, as the downside can't look any worse.

Nobody "stands out"? The Jays and Angels are the favorites to win the AL while the Rays are always in it, the Orioles may take a step back but at least showed they can do something and will definitely be a spoiler.
And you talk as if Granderson and Jeter are out all season. When they get back, Ichiro, Jeter, Granderson and Cano make for a pretty respectable top of the order. Their offense doesn't look good early, that's for sure, but they could very well come around late-May, especially if Youkilis is semi-productive. A LOT can happen in 4 months.

i believe you & i are in agreement that nobody is standing out in the AL east. the blue jays are the favorite but hardly deserve to be a favorite since they have no chemistry. the yanks, with all their offensive woes, can win the east if their pitching holds up.
they were gonna have questions on offense with tex & granderson healthy. they will have half a lineup with with scoring threats, & half a line up with no threats, & thats the best case scenario. there will be more breakdowns, & more new faces on the field nobody ever heard of.
hey i was just playing a little devils advocate for a post. everyone knows the yanks are gonna be in for some karma rebound this season.
the yanks are like a wounded gazelle, with a pack of tigers surrounding. the weakest teams in baseball, who've always been doormats to the yanks, are gonna get a chance at sweet revenge this season. dont be surprised one bit when the mets sweep the yanks for a series.
everyone is gonna show up to beat these wounded, dead duck, old timer new york yankees.

ahaha nc1capper is right. This is a Yankee hating thread....obviously it isn't hard to see that I'm a Yankee fan. And hating the Yanks is ok, but we're talking about investing here, make sound OBJECTIVE decisions. Don't bet U85 wins just because you can't stand seeing those damn Yankees win.
Also note Yanks O85 (5Dimes) went from +105 to -110. Would love to see this line dip to 84 but I doubt it.

yes. lost home runs, injured stars, signing up rejects of other teams because theres nothing in the farm system.
not facts. just opinions.

You do state some facts, as well as outlandish statements. But you're ONLY taking one side into account. You've not said anything about the pitching potential. Pettitte has been good when healthy. Kuroda was solid last season. Sabathia is Sabathia. That's a solid 3 so far. Nova had a really rough season last year but was solid before that. If he can find that form again that's another solid pitcher. Hughes was good last year but hurt right now. Will he pitch like he did last year when he comes back? Who knows. But he could.
Yes...this are optimistic opinions...but there's always 2 sides to everything and you are only giving one.

Also they are losing Nick Swisher (Beats up on bad pitching/replaced by Ichiro), Raul Ibanez (Bench), Russel Martin (Loss with no obvious replacement at the moment), Eric Chavez (Good/injury prone and replaced by Youkilis).....Overall that does not represent as big of a loss as people make it out to be. This lineup will be more balanced.
Granderson will be back, and Tex does not hit until a month or two into the season. ---Those injuries are big over-reations.
Jeter starting the season on the DL is cause for concern but it's still early.
Cashman understands how to not over pay (Soriano's asking price). So he found guys like Travis Hafner, Branden Bosch, & Vernon Wells. If 1 out of 3 can hit that's fine.

pitching is not how the yanks been winning games since the giambi/aroid era. Pitching is how gene michaels yankees won.
when is the last time the yanks brought up a franchise pitcher created from the farm system? the modus operendi of the steinbrenners has been to buy free agents. theres nobody in the minors to bring up. or they would bring them up, not sign vernon wells.
my grand point, the big one, is that the steinbrenners built the yanks on a foundation of steroids & purchasing talent instead of growing it. look at your calendars & realize the dynasty era BEGAN when george steinbrenner was kicked out of baseball, & it ENDED when george steinbrenner returned to baseball. yes, the 2000 yanks won with george. but that was gene michaels team, not georges. as soon as george was back making talent decisions, pitching went away & the name of the game was buying big juiced up bats.
now the steinbrenners & all the spoiled yankee fans are watching their chickens come home to roost
