East but they didn’t help their cause on Friday as they dropped game one in their series with the Yankees. Michael Morse and Jesus Flores had two hits each and Bryce Harper and Ryan Zimmerman had hits as the Nationals had eight hits in all but scored two runs. On the mound starter Gio Gonzalez allowed five hits and three earned runs while striking out eight over six innings taking his third loss of the year. For Saturday’s game Washington starts Jordan Zimmerman who has had two no decisions in his last two starts. For the season Zimmerman has allowed 71 hits and 25 earned runs while striking out 56 over 77.1 innings for a 2.91 ERA. The New York Yankees have now won seven in a row as they increased their lead in the A.L. East with their win on Friday. Curtis Granderson had two hits including a home run and Derek Jeter and Nick Swisher had two hits each as the Yankees scored seven runs on 10 hits. On the mound Phil Hughes allowed six hits and a run while striking out nine over six innings for his fifth win of the season. For Saturday’s game New York starts Andy Pettitte who continues his comeback. For the season Pettitte has allowed 34 hits and 13 earned runs while striking out40 over 41.2 innings of work for a 2.81 ERA. Washington is 7-1 in their last eight games against the N.L. East, 5-2 in their last seven games against a team with a winning record, and 4-1 in Zimmerman’s last five starts against the A.L. East.
