Requiem for a Heavyweight (1962) on Turner Classic Movies Saturday Nov 5th @ 11:00 pm pdt
this movie adaptation of 1956 Rod Serling "Playhouse 90" TV play is probably the best acted boxing themed drama EVER after Sylvester Stallone's Rocky or Martin Scorsese's Raging Bull. GREAT acting by Anthony Quinn as the washed up fighter "Mountain" Rivera, Mickey Rooney as his trainer-cut man Army and esp Jackie Gleason as his manager Maish.
both the movie AND Gleason should have gotten at least Oscar nominations in 1962. Gleason WAS nominated for Minnesota Fats in The Hustler BUT I think Maish was actually his better acted role that year.
check out a young Cassius Clay, before he changed to Muhammad Ali, in the opening fight scene and actual boxers from that era like Barney Ross, Willie Pep, Gus Lesnevich and Abe Simon in the bar scene.
for my movie this is a MUST VIEW for boxing themed movie fans OR those that just love GREAT drama and EXCELLENT acting. I give it
