Secondhand Lions (2003) everytime this relatively unknown comedy is on, I find myself watching it's that well done and funny. stars Robert Duvall and Michael Caine as the two "crazy uncles" 14-year old Walter Caldwell, played by Haley Joel Osment, goes to live with when his irresponsible single mother, Mae, played by Kyra Sedgwick, runs off to Las Vegas. lots of action in the "tall tails" descriptions (which turn out to be TRUE in the end) and plenty of funny "sight gags"
it's on the ENCORE-HD network again Tuesday Dec 25th @ 7:50 am pacific. it's well worth recording or getting from Netflix IF you have never seen it. the movie is that well acted, esp by Duvall and Caine, and REALLY funny. I say of three
Eleanor, First Lady of the World (1982) made for TV movie about Eleanor Roosevelt's fight for human rights during the formation of the United Nations post WWII. well acted by Jean Stapleton (who played Edith Bunker in the old "All In The Family" comedy series) as Eleanor and E G Marshall as John Foster Dulles. pretty good hour and a half IF your interested in the history.
it's on the Sony Movie channel again Sunday Dec 23rd @ 5:15 pm and Friday Dec28th @ 3:05 am. I would say of three.

I know the first TR was a classic, but how does the new one match up to the original? I don't know anyone who saw the new one and I don't want to waste 2 hrs if it happens to blow

Rat, I'm gonna do a slow down and mention a good movie instead of the garbage that everyone has sucked into. It's all Julie Christie and a great Gordon Pinsent. It's serious stuff.
It's a movie by Sara Polley and you need to watch this sort of stuff every now and then.
It's called "Away From Her". It's a brave man who watches this garbage.
This is a macho man movie. No pussies allowed on this flick.

Wanted (2008) action fantasy staring James McAvoy, Morgan Freeman and Angelina Jolie with Common, Terence Stamp and "Thousands of Rats" in lesser rolls. lots of ordnance, an excellent car chase early on, some "stuff that goes BOOM" and a couple of good "plot twists. it's kind of "X-Men meets "The Dark Night" meets "Willard"
OK IF you like the somewhat mindless "action". it's on the Fox Movie channel again Sunday Dec 30th @ 10 am and 8 pm pacific time. I would say of three

Rat, "The Skin I Live In" (2011) This a Spanish movie by Pedro Alvodar.(sp.) It's sub titled but well made with great HD type colors. Top quality editing and movie skills.
The bad thing about being a film fan is that I know the plot of movies just looking at the title sometimes. They are repetitive and mostly dumb, stupid behind. Same garbage regurgitated.
This had a twist at the end that surprised me and put the movie in a perspective that also put all the pieces together.
Not a best 100 movie but I enjoyed it a lot. Good film making.
Rat, My other December watch that's very well worth watching is "Away From Her" directed by Sarah Polley. This is a top 100 movie. I can't express my admiration for Sarah Polley and the love she put into this movie.I hear she started writing this masterpiece when she was a teenager. I don't know garbage about S. Polley but will be paying attention.
The movie was nominated for Academy Awards 5 or 6 years ago and was been saved on my Tivo for to long. I knew the subject manner and it was disturbing to me. I finally grew a pair and watched it. Gordon Pinsent and Julie Christie are flat out amazing. Brilliant!! Good movie for any age group to watch if you like good movie making but maybe more meaningful to the 60 plus group who can understand Fiona's choice to go "there" and Pinsent's pain.

Seal Team Six: The Raid on Osama bin Laden (2012) made for TV movie drama about the planing and execution of the raid that killed bin Laden that was on The National Geographic channel. pretty good drama about the events leading up to the raid. as much about the CIA getting the intell to nail him as about the Seal team. probably a pretty good "primer" for the new move ZeroDark Thirty on the same subject.
Fantastic Four (2005) was on Fox Movie channel the other night. was typical Marvel Comics "teen aged testosterone" mindless action flick with a cast of "no names"

watched Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007) sequel to the 2005 Fantastic Four on Fox Movie channel. still was pretty much Marvel Comics tripe BUT with a more interesting "saving the world" plot and somewhat better stunts and effects. still a movie BUT better than the first.

re-visited Amistad (1997) on Turner Classic Movies because since seeing Lincoln, I've got the "hots" to re-visit other Steven Spielberg movies based on historical events. worth watching when ever it's on just for Anthony Hopkins as John Quincy Adams closing summation in front of the Supreme Court

watched Black Hawk Down (2001) on the Fox Movie channel. excellent war movie BUT you have to ask "WHERE was their AIR SUPPORT?" and "WHY didn't we just EXTERMINATE Mogadishu?"
I have avoided watching this movie for years because I just KNEW it would P*SS me OFF!!!
