Coulda been a classic if they had made it more of a 'dramedy' about an older guy on his way out of the league and a young guy trying to make a name for himself. The Liev Schreiber character shoulda been given a lot more screen time.

definately agree. Schreiber's Ross "The Boss" Rhea great hockey character

haven't seen Tree Lounge BUT another excellent movie on the subject is  poet/author Charles Bukowski's 1987 semi-autobiography Barfly with Mickey Rourke as Henry (based on Bukowski) and Faye Dunaway as Wanda his love interest. it's one of Rourke's better acted movies probably because in the mid 1980's he was pretty much living the drugged out alcoholic lifestyle.

watched John Carter (2012) last night. decent SciFi action drama based on the author Edgar Rice Burroughs first book of his  "Barsoom" (his fictional name for Mars) series "A Princess of Mars" kind of goofy in spots BUT it's pretty much non-stop action and has the luscious Lynn Collins as the Martian Princess-Warrior Dejah Thoris, Carter's love interest.

IF you like Sci-Fi fantasy movies like "Thor" or "Avatar", you would probably enjoy it. I would say one  on a scale of three.

Rat,  Never seen "Barfly" but heard it was good.  Rourke is a strong actor sometimes. Interesting guy.

Can't remember... there was a great movie called "Leaving Las Vegas"?  The one N. Cage got a Oscar for. Riveting!    GL.  Doc

Rat,  I saw a movie called "Wise Blood" (1979)  last night. John Huston directed.   The much, much under rated Brad Dourif played the lead.  The spellbinding Amy Wright played the teenage vixen. Both of these are better known as character actors in many other movies and you know them even if you don't know their names. Dourif played "Billy Babbitt" in "One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest' and got a Oscar nomination. Amy isn't a beauty but just a great actress. Her common woman looks do her well.

This film is great. I loved it but I won't recommend it for others. Only real film lovers can enjoy this quirky movie. Ned Beatty and Henry Stanton round out the cast.

Amy was Rip Torns'  lover before his wife (Geraldine Page) died. After her death they married and had two daughters. Before she died she did a play with Amy. Rip Torn is on my short list of guys to have a beer with.   GL,    Doc

btw, GREAT use of the music from the final scene of  Puccini's opera "Turandot" after the final fight scene Doug and Ross in "Goon". the late Luciano Pavarotti singing Nessun Dorma from Turandot is my favorite opera aria of all time

Rat,   I love minor league hockey and some good sopranos. Pavarotti was the greatest.I can't take my eyes off him when I catch some PBS opera stuff.  Not familiar with the songs you mentioned but they must be good. I'll catch up with "Goon".  I've seen it listed but figured it was a exploitative fight movie.    Sound tracks are very interesting.

they are on YouTube. just Google "Pavarotti Nessun Dorma".

watched Red Tails (2012) on HBO last night and my suspicions were confirmed. decent WWII movie with good "Dogfights" style CGI in the air combat scenes BUT NOT anywhere NEAR as good as the 1995 HBO produced movie The Tuskegee Airmen in it's history or cast or story.

I remember that Cuba Gooding, Jr, who player a character in both movies, was asked in an interview "which is better" and his comment was "they are different types of drama"

Rat,  Just saw "Brighton Rock" on TCM.  The acting and filming were typically English great but it was a waste for me. I heard it was a must see for young English actors so I gave it a try.  Not recommended!!

The Dark Knight Rises - Great ending to this entertaining trilogy. Fans of the first two will not be disappointed.

Just watched My Week with Marilyn last night. Michelle Williams excellent in that role. Overall, a good film, a good behind-the-scenes look at the making of a film (The Prince and the Showgirl, 1957). Kenneth Branagh is good as Olivier.

Also, I love Barfly. The dialogue in that film is so good, I once just listened to the movie. I didn’t have a subscription to the channel it was on; the picture was scrambled but the audio came through. I was drunk, of course.

Yeah, that's truly a classic line.

One of my favorite lines in that film is, I think it's the publisher, walks into the bar, and says to Henry: "Who are you?"

Henry says something like: "The eternal question... The eternal answer -- I don't know."

The Three Musketeers (2011). watched on Showtime the other night. it's a pretty fast paced telling of the Alexandre Dumas classic with plenty of "swashbuckling sword play" and a "SciFi" angle to it with the da Vinci "war machine" airships. Gabriella Wilde is VERY tasty as D'Artagnan's love interest Constance in her first major movie role  I thought it was more entertaining than earlier versions I have seen like the 1993 Disney production with Charlie Sheen and Kiefer Sutherland. I would say   out of three IF you like "classic" action movies.

it's on the Showtime channels thru December 7th.

thanks for posting the link, LanceLogan. didn't realise Barfly was a Golan-Globus production. they usually did "schlock" B-movie SciFi, and "Ancient Hero" fantasy films.
