Conviction (2010) crime-courtroom drama based on the true life story of Betty Anne Waters who works tirelessly to free her brother Kenny who was wrongfully convicted of murder in Massachusetts in 1980. well acted by Hilary Swank as Betty Anne Waters, Sam Rockwell as Kenny Waters and Minnie Driver as Abra Rice as was Waters fellow law student who later helped her on her brother's case. Melissa Leo is excellent as Ayer, Massachusetts Police Sergeant BITCH Nancy Taylor who framed Kenny Waters and Peter Gallagher as DNA Lawyer expert Barry Scheck who later received national media attention while serving on O.J. Simpson's defense team.

a bit slow in spots with the "jump backs" to both Betty Anne's and Kenny's early life BUT overall worth watching IF you like crime-courtroom dramas

The Killer Inside Me- Film-noire from IFC that I picked up from the DVD bargain bin. I read the cover and Stanley Kubrick was quoted as saying the lead charactor(Casey Affleck) was the most twistedly wicked charactor he has seen. Well I double pissed myself as I mainline Film-Noire and StanleyKubrick. There is the Noire required female and there are 2 with Jessica Alba and Kate Hudson. Set in West Texas in the 1950's this is a great take on all the Film Noire conventions. It must play on the IF Channel but I haven't seen it listed. It won awards at Toronto and Berlin ,Excellent Film

Apollo 18 (2011) relatively short (86 minutes) sci-fi horror film with somewhat of an "Alien" style plot and cinematography in that, like in the original "Alien", you really never get a good look at the "aliens" until near the end of the movie. was "ok" BUT the first 30 minutes is pretty much "setting the scene" tripe. pretty much

Stanley Kubrick died 10 years before this movie came out.

    The Watch (2012)

Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonas Hill were funny as usual.  Not the greatest movie, but it had its moments.  Its a movie about a neighborhood watch group against aliens

Kubrick died before the release of EyesWideShut and he never saw this film but the quote was "The most chilling and believable first-person story of a criminally warpedd mind I have ever encountered"-Stanley Kubrick  This movie was based on a novel by Rich Thompson -1952 so he certainly would have been able to read this novel and if you notice SK had a method of making movies of major works of other authors. Lolita,2001,ClockworkOrange,TheShining and if he was so impressed with this novel by Thompson he may have considered making his FilmNoire entry based on it. Kubrick really could not have a FilmNoir production unless you might want to give consideration that Lolita is Noir. Anyway Ash you are simply a shriveled box.

21 Jump Street- Funniest movie I've seen in a while w/ Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum.  If you're in for a laugh I strongly recommend.

Rat,    Saw parts of "Conviction" awhile ago. I think I dosed off some and didn't follow it as well as I should but I do remember Rockwell being solid and interesting.  Minnie Driver was decent. Nice to see her doing a real acting role instead of that crap she used to get cast in. I never knew she could act.

Here's the real deal.  Melissa Leo.  That woman is a actor deluxe. Excuse me if I gush a little on this one. Is she ugly? Not really but she has no problem playing ugly. That makes me love her more.  Is she profane?  Fucking yes!  Will she do anything to make a role gut wrenching real??  Oh hell yes!

I wonder if a good post might be :  Who would you like to have a beer with, Living or Dead??   Hmmm!

Rat,  Just re-visited a movie called "American Me",  with J. Olmos directing and starring. (1992).  Flat out scary and I don't mean in a horror story kind of way. Very violent and profane. Many scenes played with real gang members and convicts. I enjoyed the low budget look and the hard reality. Better the 2nd time around. I'm not an expert on what real gang activity or prison life is like but this pic felt very real.

Always hate it when I miss CBS Sunday Morning. Always worth a watch for me. They had a interview with the great Sally Field this morning. Love that woman. More down to earth than most in Hollywood and great actress. She'll be playing Mary Todd in the new "Lincoln" movie. I expect a good portrayal.

Saw it a couple months back and definitely wasn't expecting anything good from this one.  Turned out to be pretty good and have plenty of funny parts.

FUCK: A Documentary (2005) just happened to record of the Doc (Documentary) Channel and it's REALLY funny AND also kind of scarry when you see the attack on the 1st Amendment by so called "Conservative" blue nose jerkoffs that don't know how to change the radio dial.

well worth watching. has a LOT of clips of Lenny Bruce, George Carlin and others that pushed boundaries of free speech.

Rat,  I've passed over the that "Fuck" doc for months.  I planned to watch but had so much more on the table. I'll get around to it.

While catching up on "Men who Build America"  I noticed a new show called "Mankind" starting tonight.  Guess I should look at look at it. History is putting out some good stuff.  Reminds me off having to go to PBS  for the intellectual shows.  Lots of nice histories and docs out there and I fear for PBS. I contribute but I think it's a lost cause. Maybe they can hang on.

Goon (2011) sports drama-comedy based of the career of minor league-club hockey fighter-"enforcer" (aka "goon") Doug Smith. VERY entertaining and fast paced with a lot of action. even has a built in "love story" between Seann William Scott as Doug "The Thug" Glatt (the "Goon") and Alison Pill as Eva. IF your not a hockey fan, it's still pretty funny. IF you ARE a hockey fan, it's GREAT. check out REAL "enforcer" Georges Laraque, one of the toughest fighters EVER in the NHL, in a couple of hockey fight bit parts

it's on Showtime again Saturday November 17th and repeats thru December 1st

Crossfire Hurricane (2012) 50th anniversary biography of The Rolling Stones with oodles of classic concert footage and coverage of "the unknown Stones" like original band member Brian Jones, who died in 1969, their early bass player Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor who replaced Brian Jones after his death.

drags a bit in spots BUT still a MUST SEE for ANY Rolling Stones fan. it's on HBO this Thanksgiving weekend

Rat,  I saw "Trees Lounge"  last night. Good indie from 1996 by S. Buscemi. He stars and produces this nice movie. Very interesting. It was showing on IFC or Sundance. Lots of great acting about alcoholics who fight the demons and sorta figure it out. Kinda. Several well known actors help Buscemi do this pic.

    I liked Goon a lot.

Coulda been a classic if they had made it more of a 'dramedy' about an older guy on his way out of the league and a young guy trying to make a name for himself. The Liev Schreiber character shoulda been given a lot more screen time.
