watched crime drama Blue Velvet (1986) last night to see IF Dennis Hopper as Frank Booth deserved his #36 spot on the AFI's list of the Top 50 Villains list. thought it was a really BAD movie with a half baked plot and acting. hell, I though that Brad Dourif as Booth accomplice Raymond was the more villainous of the two in his scenes. was a waste of 2 hours
happened to watch The Pianist (2002) again with the Mrs and I think it's one of the best "Holocaust" themed movies of all time. this true story of Polish-J e w pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman surviving the Warsaw Getto is at least on a par with Schindler's List (1993). Best Actor Oscar for Adrien Brody as Szpilman and Best Director for Roman Polanski who had actually escaped the Warsaw Getto is a young child. was nominated for Best Picture BUT lost to Chicago VERY well acted film by all involved and definite IF you like excellent WWII themed drama. plays on The Movie Channel - East (HD) again Thursday Aug 22 @ 9:00am and Tuesday Aug 27th @ 9:40 am pacific time
Dragon Wars (aka D-War) (2007). just happened to watch this Korean produced fantasy action movie based on the and found it to be fast paced with plenty of "kung-fu" style action and "stuff that goes boom". only real complaint I had was the Korean dialog, esp early on, was NOT subtitled so it was hard to follow the plot. bombed in the US market BUT set box office records in Asia. fun 90 minute non-stop action for fantasy-action fans it's on Sony Pictures channel again Sunday Aug 25th @ 2:00 pm pacific time
Malice in Wonderland (2009) about the 3rd time I have watched this British fantasy adventure loosely based on the Lewis Carroll story and each time I watch I find some new "nuance" too it. first time I saw it I thought it was a convoluted mess BUT once you figure out WHO the movies characters are from the Alice in Wonderland story, it starts to make sense. the cabby Whitey (Danny Dyer) is the White Rabbit. gangster Harry Hunt (Nathaniel Parker) is BOTH the nice King and villainous Queen of Hearts. radio disc-jockey Felix Chester (Gary Beadle) is the Cheshire Cat. the poetry spouting dope dealing pimp Caterpillar (Paul Kaye) is the Caterpillar. the two doormen at the club are Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum and Maggie Grace is VERY tasty as Alice. I would rate it BUT it IS hard to follow in spots. I had to watch about three times to "get it". was on The Movie Channel

Paparazzi (2004) critics threw rocks and the film was a box office "flop" BUT I thought it had pretty good action and suspense. the paparazzi portrayed in the movie played by Tom Sizemore, Daniel Baldwin, Tom Hollander and Kevin Gage (who played the psycho Waingro in Heat) are ALL a bunch of complete a**holes who deserve their endings. runs a fast paced 84 minutes. it's on HBO channels again Wednesday Aug 28th @ 8:15 am (East) & 11:15 am (West) and Saturday Aug 31st @ 1:35 am pacific (HBO Signature)
The Devil's Double (2011) allegedly true life story of Latif Yahia who served as Uday Hussein's "body double" from 1987 thru 1996 when Uday was crippled in an assassination attempt. VERY good acting by Dominic Cooper as both Latif Yahia and Uday Hussein. good look inside the private life of the Hussein family and shows what a bunch of psycho murderers they, and esp Uday, were. excellent suspense in spots as you wonder how Latif is going to survive crossing Uday. the world is definitely better off since the Hussein's are no longer running Iraq. played on EPIX and runs 108 minutes

It was pretty good but a little violent.

I thought this movie would be about a dog that is a ghost. It is not. It has Forest Whitaker as a gangster that lives by a samurai code. He is killing Italian mobsters. worth checking out.

--considering the crap they put out there these days for the horror genre this was better than average. It keeps you interested for most of the movie. I did leave thinking that it could have ended a lot better. I would give it 3 out of 4 stars for a horror movie.

Life of Pi (more like Cow Pie) (2012). watched this fantasy "action" movie on HBO just to see what all the "hype" was about. can't believe Ang Lee got the Best Director Oscar over Steven Spielberg for Lincoln. does have outstanding CGI work and probably deserved it's Best Visual Effects Oscar BUT overall I thought the plot was ridiculous and the first third of the movie was a complete waste. strictly "arty-smarty" tripe. found myself rooting for the tiger to eat the kid. it's on HBO channels almost daily the next week IF you want to sit thru it's over 2 hours of fantasy kid stuff. Spielberg STILL has to be royal P!SSED!!! complete
Red Dawn (2012) was skeptical that this would just be a rip off of the 1984 Patrick Swayze original BUT they made just enough subtle script changes to make it "up of date". in this one the invaders are North Koreans with Russian help and they are even nastier than the Cubans in the original. has "oodles of ordnance" and "stuff that goes boom" and is pretty much 93 minutes of non-stop action. nothing can replace the original BUT I was pleasantly surprised. this new version is running on EPIX movie channels next week while the 1984 original is on Encore channels

Just saw Skyfall easily the best of the Craig movies which isn't saying much because the first two were downright .
Thanks for the heads up on Life of Pi. I almost watched it in the movies because of all the hype but always thought from the previews it looked dumb. Won't spend a minute on it.
Saw Super 8 because Spielberg was producer. Don't waste your time.

Dog Day Afternoon (1975) surprisingly enough I had never seen the entire Al Pacino classic which was based on a 1972 Life magazine article about a botched Brooklyn bank robbery that turned into a media circus. was one of the five Best Movie Oscar either nominees or winners which featured actor John Cazale, the others being The Godfather (as Fredo), The Conversation, The Godfather Part II, and The Deer Hunter. early work by Lance Henriksen, as the agent that drives the minibus to Kennedy Airpost, who later played the Bishop android in Aliens.
GREAT acting by Pacino who was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar. it plays on the Sundance movie channel again Thursday Aug 29th @ 12:45 pm and friday Aug 30th @ 3:00 am & 10:30 am pacific IF you want to record. definite
GoldenEye (1995) is the first of the four Pierce Brosnan as James Bond movies that is remembered mostly for it's "tank chase" through St. Petersburg, Russia. it was also the first of the seven Judi Dench as "M" movies ending in the most recent Skyfall.
thought that the "Bond Villians" in the movie were excellent with Sean Bean as former "00" agent turn coat arms dealer Alec Trevelyan, Gottfried John as bent Russian Colonel (later General) Arkady Ourumov: Famke Janssen as Xenia Onatopp who is one of the best (and tastiest) female Bond villians ever and Alan Cumming as the weaselly computer programmer Boris Grishenko. their respective ends all come in true spectacular Bond fashion. on the down side, Izabella Scorupco as ""Bond Girl" Natalya Simonovathe is VERY average and Joe Don Baker as CIA agent Jack Wade could have been better cast.
overall it's excellent James Bond action. the Broccoli family rarely disappoints going back to Cubby's original Dr No in 1961. shows on EPIX channels again Thursday Aug 29th @ 9:30 pm and Friday Aug 30th @ 7:35 am & 2:50 pm pacific time. definite for James Bond fans

watched crime drama Blue Velvet ...thought it was a really BAD movie
Sounds like something a crazy person would say.
REALLY Dutch? you thought this was a well acted movie? I will concede that Hopper as Frank Booth is a decent "psycho villain" BUT the overall plot was pretty much and there have been WAY better villains in film since this movies release

That s h i t came out in the mid 80's..
In the land of 'Pretty in Pink' and 'Karate Kid', all of a sudden there was a bizarre, freaky deaky movie that blew our 12 yr old minds.
Love that movie.

80's film starring William Peterson and Brian Cox. Cox plays Hanibal Lecter and does a good job. Peterson is already broadening his CSI skills before CSI was even thought off. Tom Noonan plays the nut case serial killer. I though this was a good movie and kept you in the whole time.

just a "heads up", the classic anti-war movie Paths of Glory (1957) plays on Turner Classic Movies Friday Aug 30th @ 5:00 pn pacific time. stars Kirk Douglas as Colonel Dax, Adolphe Menjou as Major General Georges Broulard and George Macready as Brigadier General Paul Mireau. it's based on a true WWI incident when French General Geraud Reveilhac (the Mireau character in the film) ordered his artillery to shell a French trench to force his troops to attack and four French soldiers executed for mutiny as "examples" because of the failed attack. definite
Savages (2012) pretty good American growers vs Mexican cartel "drug war" action thriller. stars Taylor Kitsch (John Carter, Battleship), Blake Lively, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Benicio del Toro (Snatch), Salma Hayek and John Travolta. pretty good action and suspense with a really "wierd" ending. del Toro as "Lado" and Hayek as "Elena" are both excellent villains. plays on HBO Friday Aug 30th @ 7:30 pm & 10:30 pm pacific
Glickman (2012) VERY interesting biography of J ewish Olympic sprinter, Syracuse All-American football player and sports broadcaster "Marty" Glickman who was one of the two J ewish sprinters dropped from the 1936 Berlin Olympics because the anti-semitic Nazi sympathiser Avery Brundage didn't want to embarrass Hitler. also goes into Marty's time @ Syracuse and how he got into broadcasting. had interviews with numerous current and former sports broadcasters that learned from his delivery esp in Basketball (he helped build the early NBA) and Football. EXCELLENT documentary that should be of interest to ANY sports fan. plays on HBO again Thursday Aug 29th, Friday Aug 30th, Sun Sept 1st and Wed Sept 4th. definite
just happened to watch The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008) on Fox Movies last night. NOT anywhere close to the original 1951 SciFi classic with Michael Rennie as Klaatu, Patricia Neal as Helen Benson and Sam Jaffe as Professor Barnhardt BUT was a decent (but different) plot with pretty good action in spots and CGI.
thought that Keanu Reeves was pretty good as Klaatu. Jennifer Connelly's Helen Benson is now an astrobiologist instead of a housewife and Jaden Smith as her son Jacob is now a complete brat unlike Billy Gray as Bobby Benson in the original. thought Klaatu showed a lot of self control to not just kill the whining little punk. thought John Cleese was good in a serious roll as Professor Barnhardt and the "GORT" is much more of menace in this one. Kathy Bates as Sec Def Regina Jackson is predictably "arrogant stupid". overall it's probably BUT I think worth watching just for comparisson to the original. was on Fox Movie channel
recorded the Dustin Hoffman classic Little Big Man (1970) on Turner Classic Movies last night. also stars Chief Dan George (Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination), Faye Dunaway and Martin Balsam. Aimee Eccles was VERY tasty as Hoffman's Cheyenne wife Sunshine and I am VERY suprised she didn't do more top line movies as this was her only major role.
could probably call this one "Father of Dances With Wolves" as it goes deep into American Indian culture and history in the 19th century including fictionalised accounts of the Wounded Knee Massacre and Custer's Last Stand. Chief Dan George as Old Lodge Skins has most of the best lines in the movie. well worth watching IF you have never seen it. has both Comedy AND Tragedy in the plot. definite

Oblivion - ended up liking this quite a bit..interesting sci fi flick
finally used my free Dish-TV pay-per-view to watch Oblivion last night. had interesting "machines", good CGI and action BUT thought it was kind of a mash up of Battlefield Earth, Independence Day and The Matrix as the film had elements of each plot. also kind of "dragged" in spots. decent cast with Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman and a VERY tasty Olga Kurylenko. overall it's "OK" BUT wouldn't spend any $$$ to view it.
just happened to watch Article 99 (1992) which is kind of a "modern M-A-S-H" set in a VA Hospital. a well acted early in their careers by Kiefer Sutherland, Ray Liotta, Forest Whitaker and J. C. McGinley as VA Doctors fighting "the system". interesting characters of crippled Vietnam Vet Luther played by Keith David (was King in the movie Platoon) and Eli Wallach as WWII Vet Sam Abrams. John Mahoney plays the total a**hole of a hospital administrator. EXCELLENT "under the radar" movie that I highly recommend. VERY funny in spots BUT also addresses The problem of healthcare for Veterans. was on HBO and hopefully they will run it again soon. it is one I would get from Netflix

I read the book when a teenager and read it a few years ago. It is great. The book was worth a twice reading. Great book! Both movies were boring and sucked.

Link, First time I saw "Blue Velvet" I thought is was great. I watched a second time( 10 years) and thought is was basically unwatchable.
"Pianist" and "Schindlers" are close but I waver on the side of "Pianist" I use to read Leon Uris books when I was a child. Whats this thing I like halocaust stuff? I'M a effing Scot!
Thanks for saying that about Life Pi. I always had a feeling it was that kid stuff just done pretty. I'll keep it on tape but I have much to watch.
Don't get me started on "Dog Day" That's a good movie that has something for everyone. Just a good solid movie that screamed to you," This could happen" It was filmed like real life. You lived those 2 hours. Very good movie. A trend setter with the way the camera played.
Wasn't sure what "Glickman" was about until you mentioned it but I guess it'll be on my watch list. What the f... One more Nazi pic can't hurt.
