watched a couple
Johnny Depp movies the last couple nights
The Astronaut's Wife (1999) sci-fi psycho-suspense drama staring
Johnny Depp as astronaut Commander Spencer Armacost and
Charlize Theron as his wife Jillian.
Joe Morton is excellent as NASA man Sherman Reese who suspects that Spencer Armacost and his space walk partner Captain Alex Streck may NOT be what they appear to be upon their return from their shuttle mission. OK movie with some decent "twists" in the plot and a WAY weird ending. plays again on Encore-Suspense Sunday August 30th @ 4:40am & 2:20pm pacific time. I rate it
of four
Blow (2001) crime drama biopic based on the life of "cocaine cowboy" smuggler George Jung played by
Johnny Depp with
Penelope Cruz as his shrew of a wife Mirtha and
Ray Liotta as George's father Fred Jung.
Paul "Pee Wee Herman"
Reubens plays George's SoCal partner Derek Foreal while
Jordi Molla plays Diego Delgado (based on the real life Carlos Lehder Rivas), who introduced George to coke smuggling using his existing marijuana connections and
Cliff Curtis as Pablo Escobar. interesting real life story worth watching and Depp is outstanding as Jung. maybe his best "gangster" roll after Joe Pistone in
Donnie Brasco (1997). plays again on Starz (HD) Tuesday August 25th @ 1:00pm & 4:00pm and Encore-Classic Sunday August 30th @ 6:00pm I rate it
of four
The Giver (2014) futuristic drama about a "perfect" society which is really nothing more than a drugged up dictatorship where emotions are outlawed and no one but the selected "Receiver of Memory" has any knowledge of past history. started out rather slow and I almost dumped it BUT does pick up after the first about 20 minutes.
Jeff Bridges is interesting as The Giver who is transfering his knowledge of history to the new younger Receiver of Memory named Jonas played by
Brenton Thwaites. the lovely
Odeya Rush plays Jonas's love interest (although the actual emotion of "love" is outlawed) Fiona and
Meryl Streep is The Chief Elder. an OK drama with some decent "twists" in the plot and runs a relatively short 95 minutes. plays almost nightly all next week on Showtime channels starting Wednesday August 26th thru Wednesday September 2nd. I rate it
of four
btw. started out watching the sports-crime drama
Foxcatcher (2014) and after the first 15 minutes ended up just fast forwarding thru it. the whole damn movie is totally
and the ending just goes to prove how bent most rich kids from inherited wealth are. for me it was a complete waste of time
