Since Rink, myself and a select few other posters contribute to the monthly new movies thread, I thought I'd just create one to include one that covers any new movies you saw from September-December. And since one has yet to be created this month and we're already on the 23rd, it's probably best that I create one for the entire season today.
Coach Carter (PG-13 1995 Drama)
Rarely does Samuel L Jackson disappoint me. Based on a True Story of a 1999 California high school basketball team, strict former alum Ken Carter decides to coach this inner-city high-school basketball team. This is a "feel-good" story and is one of the better high school sports movies (I put it up there with Denzel Washington in "Remember the Titans"). I'm a sucker for movies like these.
In real life, this guy apparently made national headlines by adhering to an academic contract that he made all of his players sign in order to be on the team. When his team was not succeeding in the classroom, he forfeited each game until his players met the standards of the contract. I love this guy's style.
I rate the movie 3.5 out of 4.

two favorites of mine playing recently on HD Net movie channel
Stand Up Guys (2012) crime "dark comedy" drama staring Al Pacino, Christopher Walken and Alan Arkin as three "old geezer" gangsters having their last real "adventure". I think it is VERY well acted, VERY funny in spots, has decent action and one hell of a car chase scene. runs a short 95 minutes and is a definite "under the radar" movie for Pachino and Walken. I do NOT think the low Rotten Tomatoes 37% "fresh" is deserved. plays on HD Net movies again Monday Sept 26th @ 5:05am and Wed Sept 28th @ 9:55pm pacific times. I rate it of four
Smokin' Aces (2006) "ultra-violence" action-crime drama with an all-star cast of Ryan Reynolds, Joseph Ruskin, Ray Liotta, Andy Garcia, Alex Rocco, Alicia Keys, Common, Chris Pine and Ben Affleck. pretty much non-stop action and worth watching just for the scenes with the psychotic "Tremor Brothers" who are completely "fukk nuts" runs just under 2 hours and has an interesting "plot twist" at the end. plays again on HD Net movies Monday Sept 26th starting @ 5:00pm and again @ 8:25pm along with it's "prequel" Smokin' Aces 2: Assassins Ball (2010) staring Tom Berenger and Vinnie Jones, which I am looking forward to seeing for the first time. the two movies run back-to-back. I rate Smokin' Aces of four and hopefully the "prequel" will be as entertaining

The Good Dinosaur (2015) Pixar Studios animated action-adventure about a young dinosaur and neanderthal boy that start out as enemies BUT events "throw them together" and they become close friends during an epic adventure trying to get back home. fast paced pretty much "non-stop" action and I found it very entertaining. one warning, though. there are a LOT of situations and scary scenes I think would frighten pre-teen childern and it really is NOT a "kids movie". plays again on Starz channel Thursday Sept 29th @ 5:00pm pacific time. it runs a short 90 minutes and I would watch it again to see if i missed anything. I rate it of four
Legend (2015) British crime-action drama about the rise and fall of the English gangster Kray twins back in the 1960's. stars Tom Hardy in the dual rolls of Ronnie and Reggie Kray who controlled the London "underground" back then. small bit part by Chazz Palminteri as American gangster Angelo Bruno looking to do business with the Krays. I have always found that period in British crime history interesting BUT this movie pretty much falls flat on it's face and is strictly . I feel like I wasted 2 hours and 10 minutes of my life sitting thru it. I would be interested to see the 1990 movie The Krays to see IF it is a better telling of the story

ref >>> Smokin' Aces 2: Assassins Ball (2010). NOT nearly as good as Smokin' Aces (2006) because it just doesn't have the cast, BUT worth a look for fans of the first movie. starts out with a bang, then slows some and finishes with "oodles of ordnance" and "stuff that goes boom". Tommy Flanagan reprises his roll as hitman as Lazlo Soot and Martha Higareda is wicked hot as female assassin Ariella Martinez. the four members of the Tremor family NOT as good as in the first move BUT still provide plenty of "ultra-violence". overall a fairly entertaining movie for action fans and like the first one has a VERY weird "plot twist" at the end. runs a short 85 minutes. I would rate it of four

Based on the true story of the author of the book by the same title, it is a story of a boy relocating to a rural Washington state town with his newly re-married mother in the 1950s. The boy's stepfather is verbally and physically abusive and the story tells how he is raised in a hostile environment and how he copes with his childhood. Stars a young Leonardo DiCaprio (boy), Ellen Barkin (mom) and Robert DeNiro (step-father).
Movies is playing on the HBO channels this entire month and is highly entertaining. Worth a watch just for the cast and acting alone.

Michael Clayton (2007) legal thriller about a law firms "Ray Donovan" style "fixer" involved in a law suit coverup by his firm while trying to also straighten out his personal life. interesting but somewhat "plodding" plot that picks up at the end when the crooked agrochemical company in house woman lawyer hires hitmen to silence witnesses that may cost here company billions IF they lose a class action suit. stars George Clooney as the "fixer" Clayton, Tom Wilkinson one of the firms senior parters who has "gone over to the other side" in the suit, Tilda Swinton as the agrochemical companies lawyer and Sydney Pollack as the law firms managing partner.
was nominated for 7 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay along with Best Actor for Clooney and Best Supporting Actor for Wilkinson. Swinton WON Best Supporting Actress. has a 90% "fresh" from Rotten Tomatoes. personally I thought it was a bit convoluted and slow moving esp early on BUT it does "pick up the pace" the second half of the movie and has an interesting "plot twist" at the end. plays again on HBO-Z Sunday Octobers 2nd @ 3:00pm pacific time. The Score (2001) Canadian crime-"caper" movie filmed in Montreal stars Robert De Niro as a semi-retired cat burglar-safecracker looking to make one big score and retire, Marlon Brando as the "fixer" who sets up his scores and Edward Norton as the "inside man" with access to the target building by posing as a "Rain Man" type mentally challenged janitor. Angela Bassett plays Di Niro's love interest and Canadian character actor Paul Soles plays the Norton alter ego's kindly janitor supervisor. has somewhat of a slow start BUT has excellent suspense esp at the end and a great "plot twist" ending. it is kind of a "tour de force" for Norton really playing two characters. I thought it was well acted by all involved and was the only time De Niro and Brando played together in a movie. has a solid 73% "fresh" from Rotten Tomatoes, played on HBO and hopefully will repeat soon. I rate it of four
Lucy (2014) have reviewed the crime-action film with Sci-Fi elements numerous times and it STILL is a movie I will watch just about any time it plays if for no other reason just for the car chase thru Paris, France. it is a "tour de force" for Scarlett Johansson as Lucy a young woman forced to be a "drug mule" for an Asian syndicate BUT when a fight with one of here captors leads to the drugs inside her leaking into her system, she develops "super powers". also stars Morgan Freeman as a doctor studing the evolution of the human brain, Korean actor Choi Min-sik as a real "nasty baztard" drug kingpin and French actor Amr Waked as an Interpol DEA officer. VERY fast paced movie with "oodles of ordnance" throughout and a rather bizarre "2001" style ending. runs a short 90 minutes and has NO "filler". holds a 67% "fresh" from Rotten Tomatoes which I think is WAY under-rated. plays again HBO Monday October 3rd @12:30am & 3:30am and HBO-Signature Saturday October 8th @ 5:40pm. anyone who enjoys fast paced action movies should like this one. I rate it of four I think is is THAT good

The Fisher King (1991) this comedy-drama staring Robin Williams and Jeff Bridges with Mercedes Ruehl, Amanda Plummer, and Michael Jeter in supporting roles, is a "must see" for Robin Williams fans and has a well deserved 83% "fresh" from Rotten Tomatoes. won a number of awards including a Best Actor Golden Globe for Williams who was also nominated for an Oscar and Ruehl won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar. We Were Soldiers (2002) Vietnam era war film that dramatizes the Battle of the la Drang Valley in November 1965 from the book "We Were Soldiers Once…And Young" by Lieutenant General (retired) Hal Moore and reporter Joseph Galloway who were both involved in the battle. stars Mel Gibson as Lieutenant Colonel Hal Moore, commander of the 1st Battalion, 7th Air Cavalry Regiment, Madeleine Stowe as his wife Julia, Greg Kinnear as helicopter pilot Major Bruce "Snake" Crandall, Sam Elliott as Sergeant Major Basil Plumley and Barry Pepper as American newspaper combat correspondent Joe Galloway
I think is is a VERY well done "telling of the tale" of how the 7th Air Cavalry overcame overwhelming North Vietnamese forces and prevented the battle from becoming America's Dien Bien Phu. has unbelievable battle scenes and also goes into the effect on the families of the solders involved back home. also goes into the NVA leadership and tactics side of the battle. should be a "must see" for war movie fans and those interested in the history of the Vietnam War. played on HBO and hopefully will repeat soon. I rate it of four

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) the Jack Nicholson as Randle McMurphy and Louise Fletcher as Nurse Ratched "tour de force" that pretty much swept the Oscars that year with Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Nicholson) Best Actress (Fletcher) and Best Screenplay. it also swept those awards at the Golden Globe. Brad Dourif as Billy Bibbit was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar in his first ever screen roll. character actor Sydney Lassick was outstanding as Cheswick and there was "early work" by a lot of now famous actors like Christopher Lloyd, Danny DeVito, Scatman Crothers and the late Vincent Schiavelli. the movie is a "must see" for Jack Nicholson fans or anyone who just enjoys excellent comedy-drama. plays again on the 5-Max channel Wednesday October 14th @ 5:20am and Saturday the 22nd @ 12:10pm. obviously I rate it of four

42 (2013) biographical sports film about the racial integration of American professional baseball by Jackie Robinson who wore the number 42 through out his major league career hence the movie name. VERY well acted by Chadwick Boseman as Robinson, Harrison Ford as Dodgers owner Branch Rickey and Nicole Beharie as Robinson's wife Rachel. Andre Holland is excellent as black baseball writer Wendell Smith. I thought a VERY entertaining movie for the history and also the acting. I am somewhat surprised it didn't generate much "award buzz" as Ford esp was outstanding as Rickey. has a strong 79% "fresh" from Rotten Tomatoes. plays again on Action-Max Saturday October 22nd @ 8:30am and the Cinemax East & West channels Monday the 24 th @ 5:50pm & 8:50 pm. I like this time of year with AMC's Fright Fest; playing all types of horror/thriller movies until Halloween.
The Amityville Horror (Rated R 2005) - Did not see the original
Over the weekend, I saw the remake with Ryan Reynolds as patriarch George Lutz moving in to the haunted Long-Island house with his new wife and 3 children where the previous occupants were murdered by the eldest son with a shotgun. The young adult heard voices and killed his parents and siblings a year prior to the Lutz family moving in. The family soon begins to experience paranormal activities while George begins to hear voices himself. The movie takes place during the 1970s and is told over a month's course.
Entertaining enough that's worth a watch if you're in to horror/thriller. The movie's only 90 minutes and I believe it will be played again before Monday on AMC so set your DVR if interested.
2.5 out of 4 for me.

Hahahaha. Thanks LES
This series has a pretty big cult following; probably why there's 2 sequels. I saw the first on someone's recommendation and I thought it was ok. Nothing special but it wasn't bad at the same time. I wouldn't pay for it as it was a decent HBO movie and something to watch on a slow Saturday evening.

Fracture (2007) legal suspense-thriller staring Anthony Hopkins with Ryan Gosling and Billy Burke. basic plot is a wealthy aeronautical engineer played by Hopkins kills his wife for cheating on him BUT the deputy district attorney played by Gosling can't prove it. the "hook" is the "cat and mouse" between the two as the young DA tries to figure a way to bring Hopkin's character to justice. Hopkins is his usual "Hannibal Lecter" menacing scary. plays again on Action-Max Thursday 10-27 @ 11:55 am and repeats Monday 10-31 @ 9:15am pacific time. I thought it was an entertaining plot with an interesting "twist" at the end. has a 72% "fresh" from Rotten Tomatoes and I rate it of four

Another strong effort by JJ Abrams, not as good and fast paced as the previous Into Darkness but still entertaining nonetheless. I was worried that this franchise would suffer with JJ Abrams taking on the Star Wars franchise but he still did Star Trek justice.

just used one of my Dish-TV PPV "comp" certificates for Star Trek: Beyond. am very much a fan and have been pleasantly surprised at how GOOD the cast has been for these "prequels"

after watching I have to agree with BWS77. a good Star Trek action-adventure BUT not as compelling of characters as Benedict Cumberbatch as Khan and Peter Weller as crazy Fleet Admiral Alexander Marcus. Sofia Boutella is excellent (and NOT hard to look at) as the "warrior maiden" Jaylah. this one had a crazy "plot twist" ending and the usual excellent Star Trek CGI. definitely worth a PPV for Star Trek fans. I would rate it of four

after watching I have to agree with BWS77. a good Star Trek action-adventure BUT not as compelling of characters as Benedict Cumberbatch as Khan and Peter Weller as crazy Fleet Admiral Alexander Marcus. Sofia Boutella is excellent (and NOT hard to look at) as the "warrior maiden" Jaylah. this one had a crazy "plot twist" ending and the usual excellent Star Trek CGI. definitely worth a PPV for Star Trek fans. I would rate it of four
