well Christmas and very little sports on TV SO caught up on some movies I had recorded
Colors (1988) directed by
Dennis Hopper it is a crime-action drama about two LA cops trying to keep a lid on the Crips and Blood street gang "war" in 1980's East LA. stars
Robert Duvall as veteran cop "Uncle Bob" Hodges and
Sean Penn as his rookie partner Danny "Pac-Man" McGavin with supporting rolls by
Trinidad Silva (who played a similar roll in the TV series Hill Street Blues) as hispanic 21st Street gang leader "Frog" Lopez,
Don Cheadle (early in his career) as the Crips leader "Roccet" and
Damon Wayans (also early in his career) as "T-Bone" another Crips member. I had never seen the whole movie before and thought it was pretty well acted and had good action. has a 82% "fresh" rating from Rotten Tomatoes. played on Starz and hopefully will repeat soon I rate it
of four
The Heat (2013) crime-comedy staring
Sandra Bullock and
Melissa McCarthy as an FBI agent and Boston police detective "thrown together" to work with each other in the hunt for a drug lord in Boston. McCarthy is almost always funny in her rolls and this is no exception. the movie has a lot of LOL scenes and dialog and pretty good action in spots. has a crazy "plot twist" at the end. has an acceptable 65% "fresh" from Rotten Tomatoes. played on FX Movies and hopefully will repeat soon. I enjoyed it and rate it

The Imitation Game (2014) have reviewed this historical drama about the breaking of the German "Enigma" code in WWII by the British MI6 team at Bletchley Park before. stars
Benedict Cumberbatch as team leader Alan Turing and
Keira Knightley as Joan Clarke his best "think outside the box" code breaker. although an excellent and well acted drama which received Oscar nomintions for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Cumberbatch), and Best Supporting Actress (Knightley) AND won for Best Adapted Screenplay, the REAL story of Bletchley Park is somewhat incomplete because it makes NO reference to the work of Gordon Welchman, the father of "signals traffic analysis", which allowed the "Turing Machine" mechanical computer to solve "Enigma" daily setting on a timely basis (see
The Codebreaker Who Hacked Hitler on Smithsonian Channel). stiil, it is a great movie for those interested in WWII history and the development of modern cryptography. plays again on Starz channels Monday December 26th, Thursday the 29th and Friday the 30th. I rate it

Leon aka The
Professional (1994) crime-action drama staring
Jean Reno as the hitman Leon and
Gary Oldman as the corrupt DEA agent Norman Stansfield with then 13 year old
Natalie Portman as Mathilda whose family gets murdered by Stansfield and his crew. major supporting role for
Danny Aiello as Leon's mob boss Tony. this is one of my top ten all time favorite movies and I just can't pass it up when ever it is on TV. IF there hadn't been SO many top films like
Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction and
The Shawshank Redemption that season I can easy see this movie getting award nominations. Gary Oldman should have had a Best Supporting Actor AND the character of Stansfield should be on the AFI's 50 Villians list. AND IF Tatum O'Neil can WIN a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Paper Moon as a kid, Portman should have had a at least Best Actress nomination she was THAT good. plays again on the Sony Movie channel Saturday December 31st @ 6:40am pacific time. I like Sony because they usually show their movies in 2X1 theater perspective instead of the 16X9 "skinny scope" of many HD broadcasts. I obviously rate this movie
