watched Bugsy (1991) on HD Net movie channel last night. GREAT movie about gangster Benjamin ("DON'T call me Bugsy") Siegel which won the Golden Globe Best Picture and was nominated for the Best Picture Oscar along with Warren Beatty for Best Actor in the title roll, both Harvey Keitel and Ben Kingsley for Best Supporting Actor as Mickey Cohen and Meyer Lansky with Barry Levinson being nominated for Best Director. why NO Best Actress nomination for Annette Bening as Virginia Hill is beyond me.
one of the GREAT "mob movies" of all time and hopefully will play again on HD Net movies or some other channel soon. definite
side note: Beatty and Bening fell in love during the filming of Bugsy and have been married since 1992 they now have four children and by all accounts it is one of the best marriages in Hollywood. has been compared to "Bogie and Bacall"

Pacific Rim (2013) watched on my Dish-TV pay-per-view and IF I had NOT have a comp certificate, I would have felt ripped off. had all the requisite CGI and "Transformers vs Godzilla" fights BUT was a pure 1950's Japanese monster movie plot and the characters were NOT interesting at all. I thought the recent "alien invasion" movie Battleship (2012) had a much better plot, better battles and more interesting characters
save your money and wait for it on HBO or some other premium movie TV channel. it is total and NOT worth pay-per-view. was kind of "suspicions confirmed" from when I saw the trailer on YouTube

Mark of the Vampire (1935) short 60 minute early Bela Lugosi vampire "follow up" to Dracula with Lionel Barrymore as Professor Zelen (a "Van Helsing" vampire hunter style character), Lionel Atwill as Inspector Neumann, Jean Hersholt as Baron Otto, Holmes Herbert as the murdered Sir Karell Borotyn, Donald Meek as Dr Doskil (you will recognize him. he always played a "milk toast" character in many early horror movies), Elizabeth Allan as Sir Karell's daughter Irena and a very exotic Carroll Borland as Count Mora's (Lugosi) vampire daughter Luna. I am surprised that Borland only did one other short film and an unbilled appearance in the 1936 Flash Gordon serial back then.
interesting somewhat different plot from the standard "vampire" fare. has a HUGE "plot twist" at the end. very "batty" movie that is an excellent example of 1930's special effects esp with the Count Mora and Luna transformation from bat to human form scenes. was on Turner Classic Movies and is worth watching IF your into early Lugosi vampire horror.

Watched the "Strange loves of Martha Ivers" One of Kirk Douglas first movies. The pool of actors must have been slim for him and Van Heflin to still get parts. Stanwyck was good as usual.

watched the documentary Blackfish on CNN about the treatment and dangers of working with the Sea World Orca's (aka Killer Whales). thought it was pretty interesting. airs again on CNN Sunday Oct 27th @ 6 and 9 pm and Monday Oct 28th @ 12 am midnight pacific times
Hitchcock (2012) probably the best acted movie I have seen this year after Lincoln and Argo. it is the story of the making of Psycho with Anthony Hopkins as Alfred Hitchcock and Helen Mirren as his wife and partner Alma Reville. Scarlett Johansson is outstanding as Janet Leigh while James D'Arcy really captures the mannerisms of Anthony Perkins. Michael Wincott is VERY spooky as Ed Gein who's murders in and around Plainfield, Wisconsin in the 1950's inspired the character of Norman Bates in Psycho.
excellent drama all around and definite it is on HBO channels again Wednesday Oct 30th and Saturday Nov 2nd. am VERY surprised it didn't receive any of the "Big Six" Oscar nominations
The Patriot (2000) another Mel Gibson historical epic this one about the battles in the southern colonies during the American Revolution. thought it was pretty well acted and an excellent "generally true" history BUT, as in Gibson's 1995 Braveheart, has a LOT of small historical inaccuracies esp about the Jason Isaacs character British Cavalry Colonel William Tavington which is loosly based on General Sir Banastre Tarleton. good early work by the late Heath Ledger as Gibson's son Gabriel
IF you liked Braveheart you would probably enjoy this. has a LOT of action and battles and Tavington is one of the great "villains" I have seen in quite some time. the guy really "got my bold up". it is on Encore Tuesday Oct 29th @ 2:00 pm and again on Starz-Edge Thursday Oct 31st @ 1:10 pm pacific times

Cloud Atlas (2012) almost blew off this 3 hour German "Gotterdammerung" the first half hour it was SO weird and convoluted with it's jumping around from story to story BUT stuck with it and turned into a pretty decent action movie in the "Neo Seoul", "San Francisco" and the post-apocalyptic "The Big Island" stories. IF they had made the movie just based on those, would have been an hour shorter and much better because the rest is pretty much tripe. I am somewhat surprised that Tom Hanks, Halle Berry and Susan Sarandon would let themselves get roped into this
it is on HBO channels again Tuesday Oct 29th, Wednesday Oct 30th, Thursday Oct 31st, Sunday Nov 3rd and Monday Nov 4th. maybe one of those movies you have to see more than once to understand BUT, like the latest Hobbit movie, it is WAY too LONG

watched Cloud Atlas (2012) a second time AFTER reading the plot outline on their Wikipedia page. normally this would be a "spoiler" BUT in this case it helped me understand WHAT the HELL was GOING ON because the movie jumps back and forth between the six stories so much.
still think that "Neo Seoul" was the most compelling story for it's plot, action, CGI and characters with the VERY tasty Doona Bae as the "fabricant" clone revolutionary Sonmi~451(I have a thing for Korean girls) and Jim Sturgess as her "Lohengrin" or "Siegfried" style rescuer and loverHae-Joo Chang. the story probably would have made an excellent action movie on it's own

I was sure I was going to hate this movie..........maybe I was in the right mood, who knows..........but I liked it a lot. It's a chick flick but it has some good acting & an odd but somewhat inspirational story line.

watched Finding Forrester (2000) last night. interesting drama about a talented young black writer and basketball player Jamal Wallace (Rob Brown) who is mentored by a reclusive writer William Forrester (Sean Connery) who had a "one hit wonder" of a novel in the past. mostly because of his basketball skills he gets a scholarship to a "yuppy-puppy" prep school where the prejudiced literary professor Robert Crawford (F. Murray Abraham) thinks he is "just a jock" and there is NO WAY he can do that quality of writing.
very well acted by all involved esp Rob Brown. I am really surprised he hasn't been offered more rolls. his only other major lead I have seen him in is as football player Ernie Davis in The Express (2008). also excellent acting by Connery and Abraham (at his best Antonio Salieri style jealous a**hole self). it is on the Starz-Black channel again Wednesday Oct 16th and Saturday Oct 19th and I think worth watching
plays again on Encore Friday Nov 1st @ 7:45 am pacific. it is available in HD so hopefully NOT the Starz-Black 3X4 "skinny scope" version. like I said in the original post, an EXCELLENT drama

I haven't seen the movie but this is a classic Sean Connery line.

Ouch, Wagner is a confusing person because Hitler liked him but I used to watch his Operas ( Ring Cycles ) before I knew that. It was a PBS and a smoking a joint thing.
I was happy to hear that the Israeli symphony played his works ( under some protest ) a few years ago. His works hang in my mind.
I can never get Gershwin out of my head. On weekends or days off I put Beethoven, Mozart, Gershwin on the player first at wake up while I make the coffee because they make me feel like a smart guy and the day is gonna play out in my favor. Wagner is more of a going to a sports event play.
Forgot about something. Playing the theme from "Brave Heart" will work nicely if you are romanticizing a woman.

Wagner WAS anti-Semitic BUT that was (unfortunately) the culture in Germany in the 19th Century. it didn't stop him from using J-e-wish conductors, musicians and singers in his operas IF they were the most talented people for the position. in fact Hermann Levi was principle conductor at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus for a time and conducted the first performance of Parsifal there in in 1882
Wagner is more of a going to a sports event play.
I use a LOT of his music to "get reved up" for a game with the most obvious being Walkurenritt (Ride of the Valkyries) from Akt 3 of Die Walkure (aka "Kill Da Wabbit")
