watched the documentary "Schooled": The Price of College Sports on EPIX1 last night and I wanted to throw stuff at the TV. it is based on the book "The Cartel: Inside the Rise and Imminent Fall of the NCAA" which began as an article in The Atlantic, "The Shame of College Sports".
bottom line is that the so called "student-athlete" get absolutely SCREWED under the NCAA system. they make BILLIONS for the Universities yet get NOTHING for their labor other than the so called "free education" (which is hardly "free"). while other students, like a student body President, teachers student assistant, or just a student working on campus wor the school, can be PAID by the University. the athletes, under NCAA rules, can NOT.
in what was a really ridiculous scene was at a conference where a college professor was arguing that players should at least a "stipend" they can live on, some United States Naval Academy sports administrator got in his face about it. turns out that USNA Midshipmen, including their athletes, are paid a $990 monthly military salary
one of the things that is MOST egregious scams is that even WHEN a "student-athlete", a phrase coined by Walter Byers, the man who more or less created the NCAA and was it's director for years, is finished with his or her "Indentured Service" , because IF you read the definition, THAT IS what it IS, and leaves school, the NCAA STILL owns their name and likeness for use in video games, sports marketing, ect WITHOUT compensation
in my personal opinion, I think the major college sports like Football and Basketball, which are the major money makers for the schools, should be like the Major Juniors in hockey OR minor league baseball. PAY the kids something so they can at least have a LIFE other than just their sport. looks to me like the NCAA, as was stated in the documentary, has a "Plantation Mindset" where "massa know best". interesting how the NCAA management is a bunch of old white men where many of the players, esp in football and basketball, are black?
it plays on EPIX1 channel again Thursday Oct 17th @ 1:15 pm, Sunday Oct 20th @ 5:00 pm and Monday Oct 21st @ 2:15 am & 9:35 am if you want to record. here is the EPIX web page >>> https://press.epixhd.com/programming/schooled-the-price-of-college-sports/
definitely worth watching for sports fans
