A Clockwork Orange. excellent pick OzFactor. worth watching just for the fight scene in the old casino to the music of Rossini.

I'll take a wild stab at this (I've seen this lots of times too) without going back and looking.
2 wild guesses: Willie Mosconi (just cause I know he was a technical director)
Minnesota Fats (just cause he was one of Mosconi's main opponents n friends for years ) He always had that bartender look too. I'm kinda a pool junkie.
Probably wrong but those are my wild guesses.
=========================
I know what you mean by watching old movies n always discovering something new. The more I watch The Hustler the more I realize just how every cast member was so seemingly perfect for their role.
I also loved the negotiating of the gambling scenes and how they're so competive against each other while at the end of each match they have the utmost respect for each others skills and character.
Good guesses from a pure handicapping angle.
However it was the one and only: Jake LaMotta.

definitely add Gladiator. Have seen it 50+ times easy, & I will see many many more times.
Fight Club and Rounders finish off the list of movies I've seen many times. No Country For Old Men is climbing on that list.
