In no particular order:
1. Rakim - Simply brought multi-syllabic lyricism to the table. Set the standard for what an MC should sound like. Rakim influenced other great MC's...pac, nas, method man, ghotface, just to name a few.
2. Nas - He created one of the most best LP in Hip Hop in Illmatic. You can cycle through the whole album without skipping a track. Best hip hop album IMO.
3. Big Pun - Big Pun delivered brilliant lyricism with a graceful, pacy flow that is an alien concept to most overweight rappers nowadays. Its a shame his life was cut short because of his weight.
4. Big L - The best freestyler and battle emcee ever. Big L influenced every freestyler that's battling today, his flawless flow and incredible rhyming ability made him one of the most promising talents. His lyrics were shocking, I remember first listening to 'Put It On' and literally gasping at this man's use of rhymes and wordplay.

The Rap Mount Rushmore is as accurate as it gets...
2pac - highest selling rapper of all time...recorded more in a short period of time than anyone could've imagined...for those of you who don't think he's real...read a biography about him.
Biggie - flow was absurd...recorded the highest selling rap CD of all time (Ready to Die) which last time I checked was the only rap LP ever go Diamond...Had he lived longer, hip hop never would have died.
Nas - my personal favorite...flow and lyrics are some of the best ever..he can tell a story in a song like none other (none of this dance song shit)...Haven't met a Nas song i havn't liked...Illmatic is dope.
Jay-Z - Mr. Consistent in the rap game...been around for ever...and still drops hot lines, songs, and albums...it also helps him in my mind that he knows the game so well...Roc Nation will be the next Death Row.
Besides the 4 big guys, either of these two fill out my #5 spot...
Eminem - lyrical genius with a menace for a mind...always battling the "white rapper" persona...3rd highest selling Rap artist of all time behind only Jigga and Pac...no argument against him in anyones top 5
Big L - lyrical beast...RIP
Opinions on others..
Dr. Dre - Great producer..can make an album and a song...but doesn't write his own rhymes.
Lil Wayne - Arguably best rapper in terms of delivery ever...he could rap about shit, piss, and jenkum and make it sound ill...sadly he makes TONS of shitty songs..and it is questionable whether he writes his own music (look up Gillie Da Kid)
50 Cent - Get Rich or Die Tryin was filthy, but fell off in my mind since.
Guru - One of the greatest IMO..Hands down best rapper to come out of Boston...RIP...
Ludacris - Consistent rapper w/ catchy rhymes and flow. Gotta love him.
Game and DMX - two rappers I have tons of respect for because they are REAL. Good rappers but better gangsters.
Immortal Technique - lyrically on the same level as Nas, Eminem, and Big L...not going mainstream is his biggest strength and weakness.
Snoop Dogg - OG rapper, with a unique style...huge for Death Row

THE B.E.T list is so disrespectful by not mentioning JA RULE fom 1999-2004 he was one of the top selling artist out. VINNI,VETTI,VECCI (1999) 1.8 million U.S sold- RULE 3:36 (2000) 3.4 million US sold- PAIN IS LOVE(2001) 3x platinum-LAST TEMPTATION(2002) over double platinum-BLOOD IN MY EYE(2003) 400,000- R.U.L.E(2004) 400,000. No RESPECT what so ever. B.E.T's list of best rapper of the 21st century (99-2010)

Just because something sells a lot doesn't make it great; this is a greatest rappers thread not a highest selling.

Isnt it proof in itself that despite being a purely underground rapper, Immortal technique still has a relatively strong but more importantly--loyal fan base?

True that but if you see the list they had (Gucci Mane,Rick Ross,Nelly) cant compare to what jarule acomplished in between those years.none of these rappers deserve to be on the list....

1. Biggie (changed Rap as we know it, ready to die was sick, i bet everyone on this thread knows every word to that album.
2. Eminem ( genius with his words, no one, i mean no one writes like him. had a couple of down albums but overall body of work is so good. "works wizardry with these words"
3. Jay z - probably the most successful rapper ever, changed pop culture. Made it acceptable to be a rapper in the public eye.
4. Rakim - see eminem
5. GZA - Best from the WU. Meth got the fame, but liquid swords is probably in my top 5 rap albums of all time.
6. NAS - Nasty Nas comin through your area, about to cause mass histeria. Nas had the potential to be the greatest of all time, but IMO he got a little weird on his later albums, not really sure i understood what the hell he was talking about sometimes.
7. REDMAN -Underrated in the rap game. The man can spit.
8. 2pac - Gangsta poetry. ICON in music and pop culture.
9. JADAKISS - Also underrated and over looked out side of the East coast.
10. Ice Cube - O.G. - listen to Amerikkkas most wanted.
