My last thread in here hopefully convinced a few that music continues to be just as awesome as it was when you were 13-18. Most of it linked to great music from the last 5 yrs or so. Im going to try and keep this one updated with more recent tunes.
Rock:
Kings of Leon - Use Somebody (2008) and Fans (2007)
Bedouin Soundclash - Walls Fall Down (2007)
Hip hop:
Lupe Fiasco - Superstar REMIX (2008) Hip Hop Saved My Life (2007)
K'naan - ABC's (2009) Wavin Flag
Estelle ft Kanye - American Boy (2008)
Indie-electronic/Dance:
Santigold - Lights Out (2008)
MGMT - Time to Pretend (2007)
Bloc Party - Talons (2008) One Month Off [depeche fans should like these]

I agree that there's still some very good music to be had, but what I question is the shelf life of most of these newer artists. I thought for sure The Killers would be the next big thing, but they've sort of fizzled out. Linkin Park started out strong, but it looks like they've sort of run their course as well. Same goes for Franz Ferdinand, Evanescence, Jimmy Eat World, etc... In fact, among the few artists I envision still being relevant ten years from now are Coldplay, Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes and (wait for it...) Avril Lavigne.
I guess the problem once you hit a certain age is that you've pretty much heard it all before. Hopefully there's something big in the offing for the 2010's.

I actually really like The Killers new CD, Day and Age. They continue to reinvent themselves and try new things. Day and Age really brings their 80s influences front and center. I also should have put Human in the original post. They definitely have staying power.
Aside from the Strokes and Coldplay, the other bands listed don't even belong in the same category. Coldplay has staying power because their mediocre alt-rock sound appeals to plenty of ppl, despite being devoid of substance (in my opinion). Maybe Franz Ferdinand and Arctic Monkeys escape the same criticism. But all the other "bands" are incredibly one dimensional.
Jimmy Eat World is what it is. I dont hate them but I wouldnt put them in a category of great new music. Despite minor variations in the subject manner and power chords, it all sounds the same. That goes for Linkin Park, Evanescence, and Avril Lavigne.

Okay, well, maybe Jimmy Eat World wasn't the best example...
The one thing I do find rather intriguing about this decade is the lack of impression it's going to be leaving behind. For example, look at all the different genres that marked the 90's: Hair Metal, Grunge, Modern Rock, Industrial, New Country, Electronica, Brit-Pop, Rap-Rock.
What's this decade really had to offer? Nu-Metal? Tween? Emo?
I'm not saying that there hasn't been any good music this decade - it just seems rather telling that two of my favourite CD's of the 00's (?) are going to end up bookending the decade ("Lateralus" by Tool and "Appeal To Reason" by Rise Against), without all that much in between.
p.s. When I was "13-18" years old, I had The Smiths, Depeche Mode, The Cure, R.E.M., Prince, Madonna, Pixies, U2, Guns N' Roses, Metallica... I question what these kids will have to look back fondly upon.

The 00's have amazing albums from Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse, Dr Dre, Kanye, Jay-Z, Jurassic 5, White Stripes, Broken Social Scene, N.E.R.D., Radiohead, Lilly Allen, Stars, Matthew Good, Death Cab for Cutie, Feist, Green Day, Bright Eyes etc
add to that list, the bands I listed above. Maybe itll take time to appreciate them as it did for any great band from the 80s and 90s.

this might be equivalent to using Chumbawumba, Nsync, Backstreet Boys, Semi Sonic etc as the limits of what the 90s has to offer
The lasting genres from the 00s will probably be coined after the fact. I dont think anyone called The Cure, My Bloody Valentine, or Smasing Pumpkins "shoegazers" in the early 90s. But I could be wrong. Some genres have already been coined. And the 00s seem to be dominated by "indie" rock thats being classified right now as "twee" "electropop" and various kinds of nu-folk, nu-gaze.
"Hip hop" seems to be changing too. You also see more rappers shedding the "rap" label and experimenting with traditional instruments over synthesizers. Case in point - Wyclef, the Roots, and even more mainstream artists like Lil Wayne. They also seem to be integrating spoken word with some rythym, like K'naan, Mos Def, Saul Williams

Check out My Jerusalem. Just dropped a new EP this past week. Jeff Klein fronts the band. Looking forward to the actual album's release.
Also, Morrisey's new album is solid, as well as M. Ward's.
A few others would be Jenny Lewis "Acid Tongue", Jolie Holland's "Living and the Dead", Connor Oberst, "Connor Oberst", and anything by Appleseed Cast.
I would like to be ambitious enough to find some links for everyone, but I am half F*cked up and cannot.
Check this sh*t out, you will not be sorry.

I agree, music today does not suck. However, main stream music today does suck and I can see why people say that it does suck. Of course, what sounds great to me might not to someone else.
There is great music out there you just have to look harder to find it. Threads like this can point you in the right direction, the last thread had some solid postings.
Here are a few tracks from bands that have been getting alot of play at my house.

hugh - i had no idea there was a new silversun pickups album coming out...thanks. the single is decent.
Kevk- The Marjorie Fair and Pinback tunes are great...will be checking them out for sure. I've been a huge spoon fan for years, a series of sneaks is their best album imo, check it out sometime if you haven't heard it.

in my opinion I am a producer and it is really hard to find music, hopefully artists one day will do music not just for the money and fame, but just to do really good music.
Please understand people that we need to stop buying music that are not artisticlly greate like britney spears, christina aguilera, jonas brothers.
and listen artists like amy winehouse, lil wayne, etc...
PLEASE CHANGE YOUR THOUGHTS BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE
