all the youngsters listed great shit.
You're exactly what THEMUGG was talking about. Those bands have some great musicians, but they aren't rock bands. I would put Tom Morello up against any guitarist in any era and he'd definately hold his own.

Reppin the class of 1983. I listen to mostly hip-hop, but some of my fave bands/singers:
Petty & the Heartbreakers, Springsteen & E-Street Band, Jackson Browne, Cat Steevens, Neil Young, Smokey Robinson, Mellencamp, Van Morrison
I agree that almost everything made since the late-nintys has pretty much mostly been complete garbage, but some 'newer' bands i listen to:
Pearl Jam, Modest Mouse, Rancid, Motion City Soundtrack, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Planet Smahers, O.A.R, Dave Matthews Band, Alice in Chains, Smashing Pumpkins, Counting Crows, Offspring, Ben Harper, System of a Down
I might be forgetting some but I think that pretty much covers it..

Forgot about the 2nd part of the q, some memorable concert performances:
Tom Petty - 1st order of business as soon as I got my drivers liscense when I was 16: drive to detroit to see Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. This is, was, and likely will be my favourite concert ever.
John Mellencamp - I'm thankful he came to my city. I saw this show with my parents, dead sober, and was in complete awe the whole time. I love that dude, he should be president or something, every word he speaks is so powerful & true.
Miranda Lambert - Big fan of hers. Saw her in a small venue, front row center. Musically it was pretty good, but being pretty much directly underneath her close enough to touch for an hour & a half was really enjoyable.
Modest Mouse - Another small venue front row center situation. Being so close to Isaac Brock was surreal. He's a fascinating person.
Rage Against the Machine, Queens of the Stone Age, some other joke band I dont remember - Sucessfully snuck into Alpine Valley with no ticket to see this 1. God awful weather, but the huge storm made for some crazy mudslides on the lawn area. Not many girls, but the ones that were there were pretty much all wearing white t-shirts/tank tops and were covered in water/mud. The opening band sucked, Queens of the Stone Age really sucked, but to see Rage was such a treat.
Pearl Jam - Seen them 6 times. Eddy Vedder always makes me feel so inspired and happy, he's 1 of my heroes.
Bruce Springsteen & the E-Street Band - Comerica Park show. It 4 hours long, no opening band. They played for 2 hours, quick break, then encored for another 2. So high-energy I dont know how the whole band didnt collapse onstage. Amazing. It was also a Sunday night show, and earlier in that afternoon I saw my Vikings whoop the Lions at Ford Field across the street. Great day.

I saw him @ The Gorge (George,WA)..........funny thing, I didn't wanna go.........caved in to wifey's demand & went with another couple. Turned out to be a damn good show...........maybe the biggest surprise concert I've seen next to Alice Cooper.
You've got a pretty well-rounded mix there Shelby.......
