no doubt. they have to be in the top five. Just like you said - regardless of your feelings on them there is no way they do not belong in the top 5.
On a related story - did anyone see the Rolling Stone magazine top 500 song list that they recently did? They did not have a single Paul Simon song on there. LIke his music or not there is no way that a Paul Simon song does not belong in the top 500.

In no particular order, honorable mention to The Grateful Dead, The Allman Brothers and CCR.
You get 100 posters and you'll get 100 different answers on this subject.
I agree with four but would put Aerosmith in here in place of The Who... just my personal opinion. I'd have to make the Beatles # 1 based on longevity.
1) Beatles
2) Rolling Stones
3) Led Zeppelin
4) Pink Floyd
5) Aerosmith
...followed by AC/DC, The Police and Guns and Roses as honorable mentions since they are also two of my favorites. Queen would also be in my Top 10 list (since the OP mentioned them).
I was blessed to have lived when these bands were in their primes. The weakness of todays music with the top acts is a reflection of the society we live in today. Most will be remembered as fads and NOT anywhere near TIMELESS as those mentioned on this thread.
Oldtimers rejoice... We witnessed CLASSICS in the making.

I'd definitely be in agreement with your top 4...............but I'm one who never got off on the Stones. They have a few songs I like but the bulk of their stuff just doesn't do anything for me. I can understand having them in a top 5 but i would probably lean towards having Supertramp, Rush, Queen, AC/DC, or Aerosmith as my 5th. Like you said..........opinions will vary & I certainly wouldn't chastise anyone for having them in their top 5.

No prob with Mugg's top 3, but would prob drop Pink Floyd to 5th & replace the Who & Stones with Santana, Steely Dan, Yes and/or Cream/Blind Faith though they were short lived. All a matter of taste though, can easily see the Stones in the top 5 for most -

Of course they are if for nothing but the contribution to Rn'R however u will find some that can't stand 'em because they tend to fall in the Cowboys/Yankees category where ppl either like 'em a lot or can't stand 'em then the 1 or 2% of ppl that are neutral and just don't care either way. They're my personal all-time fave because I kinda made their stuff from about 67-81 the soundtrack of my life growing up and trying to live out the songs with the girls, drugs, and good times which I did have some of the best and unforgettable times of my life with them playing in the background. Anyhow yea they would qualify top 5 for me with just the aforementioned years above the rest was just filler and even some of that has a couple gems mixed in. I mean lookit Tattoo You was basically leftovers from the 70's that they felt weren't good enough to put on any of those albums which is a pretty damn good album in its own right. Todays Stones are pretty irrelevant to me but gotta think if my grandpa was still kicking and cutting discs I doubt I'd be into it but I'll still pay to see 'em live even when they're rolled out in wheelchairs & unplugged.
Stones Beatles Floyd Zep Radiohead
Gotta put RH in there for some new flavor and its not a complete handful of dinosaurs. Another Stones note I think that even if someone can't stand their commercial stuff and find Mick repulsive but enjoy bluesy rock they could quite possibly change their minds once they gave Sticky Fingers & Exile on Main St a try. I'm talking about the original Exile because this new hoopla they recently put out didn't excite me much which had a couple extra leftovers on it and I thought they were kinda shooting for that Tattoo You magic again, pretty cool for collectors I guess. I still have my original 2 of those I grabbed around 89. Also my first CD I ever owned I still have as well same case and everything Zeppelin 1, that I got sometime 1988. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vv9IPIGR6uk

Talking to a friend the other day about the greatest Rock bands.......she didn't rate the Stones in the top 5
I can't see how anyone could not rank them in top 5 even if you're not a great fan
personally I'd go Queen no.1 - not sure about my other 4 but Stones would have to be one of them
am I just an old sentimentalist or do they deserve to be ranked?
If you don't think the Stones are Top 5, you're f-n stupid. You have to throw personal preference out the window. I can't stand The Beatles (hate nearly all their shit), but they're Top 5.
Everybody has their personal fave...who cares? Who made a major impact on the world of music?
Zep
Stones
Beatles
Start right there.

Aerosmith sucks/sucked. Overrated garbage. Pink Floyd is depressing and pretentious? eat an eighth of mushrooms and listen to Floyd. Your little brain will be blown out of the water.
