It's gotta be Whitney Houston.  I can remember growing up and hearing her sing "I will always love you."  She can really belt it out.

As far as the last 25 years go, Annie Lennox has to be included somewhere in the list. I'd put her album "Diva" against any other female vocalist's album during that time.....

I agree with Lennox.  Not a big fan of her oeuvre, but I've seen her play solo on videos, just her and a piano, and she is very special.  Plus, didn't she survive throat cancer?

Incredible.

Also, I'm with the posts on Houston's "I Will Always Love You."

I'll always remember falling in love with her voice on that song.

I also heard her for the first time when I was I guess a jr/sr in college.1986 or so. Can't recall right this sec......Her album called "Sleight of Hand" had that tune on it.

Anent, Cass. Wilson seems to have done some decent covers of good tunes as I found out on youtube.....Cool stuff....

I don't learn much from anyone around here anymore as many years as I've been capping games, but I sure find other good shit out.

Great stuff. I'm into black female vocalists. What's not to like if they can sing.

I'm also into covers of songs I like, if the person/group that's doing a cover of a tune gives it the proper respect while putting their own touch on it, without violating the original....if ya know what I mean. 

A good for instance....Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band do a great cover of one of my fav band's The Clash's "London Calling"

I like covers that sound different enough from the original, but yea, without disrespecting it.

Best cover I've heard the last year and a half was The Bad Plus doing Lithium.  I downloaded it right away.  It's a jazz version.

I'm into black female musicians too!  LOL!

Cassandra can be pretty mellow and different from Armatrading, but I was glad to discover her in the late '90s.  I think she peaked by now, but I've lost touch with her music the last 5-6 years.  I'll check out those vids.

You must be about 3 years older than me, judging from our college days comparison.

Karen Carpenter's gotta be mentioned  somewhere here in the top echelon whether you liked their tunes or not - incredible voice. Best & most influential female artist if not voice for the past 50 yrs has gotta be Joni Mitchell -

It's tough to decide, but a few great female singers I haven't seen mentioned yet are Julianna Hatfield and Liz Phair.  However, I don't think anyone can beat Tarja Turunen, original singer of Finnish metal band Nightwish.  She has unbelievable talent.
