This matchup is a very interesting one. I have read a lot of threads on this site that dissparage Derek Fisher for his age, lack of altheticism, lack of speed, and so on.
Rajon Rondo is an exceptional point guard but he does have some major flaws to his game. I understand he is still young so he has a lot of maturing to do.
-Some of his positives are being able to rebound very well as a point guard, come up with steals, distribute the ball well, and his speed on the fast breaks and athleticism all around but he also has a lot of things to work on:
~This guys FG% is absolutely mindboggling at 50%. Very impressive for a point guard of his calibur who will not take many 3's or mid range jump shots. But he lacks a 3 point shot and a mid range jump shot which limits his repertoire. I do not know how he has a fg% of 50 its incredible but I guess he does take a lot of layups, floaters, 5 footers and stuff like that but
~Another reason that hes not necessarily better than Fisher is his FT% which is HORRENDOUS at 62%. Hes a point guard and desperately needs to get that above at least 70% closer to 80%. That is a tremendous part of his game that he needs to work on.
~His decicion-making needs improvement as well. I know he is able to make sensational passes at times and spread the ball all around the court with great vision but I think somtimes he seems to get to cocky sometimes and fancy.
Derek Fisher could be a future hall of famer if he didnt play along side that guy Kobe Bryant almost his whole career. But this dude is an great ball player and competitor.
I know he may not have the hops, young age, athleticism, ability to make great looking passes, but he sure does do a lot of other things fundamentally well.
~He has a FG% of 40% which for his age and position is respectable. Considering he does not take very many shots he makes the important ones he does take.
~His 3p% during the regular season was 34% but is 38% during the playoffs which is very good. Along with his fg% being up to 45% during the playoffs. Unlike Rondo this guy can make the open jump shot along with the 3 point shot.
~His ability to get steals and force turnovers is exceptional and very similar to rondo's at 1.1 steals per game. I think an important thing to consider is his frame. Fisher is very strong and is certainly much stronger than Randa. While he may not be as quick he can certainly put a body on him and put in good minutes on the defensive side of the floor.
~His experience and leadership, basketball IQ, decision-making, and intangibles are much better than Rondo as well. The guy is a 4 time champion, he knows how to win. He was just as important as the rest of those role players in the lakers other championships.
Lastly I would give the edge to Fisher in this series because of his decision-making, smart shot selection, and best of all experience.
Teams go deep in to the playoffs and win championships because of experience, its that simple.
