I am a newbie so I'm looking for details on points.How do I know how many points to buy for a favorite or an underdog? What does the drop down menu mean, for example, by -9 1/2 (-115)? Do I have to buy points for a power team, in addition to the one indicated on ?

Well first off, why are you buying points? You need to understand first how to treat betting sports. I take this as a professional hobby, almost like a day trader with stocks, mutual funds, etc. This is YOUR MONEY that you're investing with each wage that you make.
Before you start buying points, understand how we even get there in the first place. For example, let's just say the Knicks are playing the Nets. You need to learn how to create your own point spread for this game so you can compare it to what Vegas has it at.
You can YouTube this or simply learn a ton on this website itself on how to create your own point spreads and how to become a handicapper. I have been doing this for a few years and now I know what mostly works for me and the way I compute my numbers.
So now you are capping games and making your own line projections. Say by your numbers you have the Knicks being a 5 point favorite. The line you see in Vegas might be 6, 7, or even 4 for that matter. Depending on the situation and how you think your team performs late in the game (free throws, fouls, etc) - it's possible you may want to buy the 5 down to a 3.5 or a 4 just to give you some better confidence going into the game.
Overall they say buying points costs you in the end, so I would do it here and there. For me, I do it often but since I have a high winning %, the juice doesn't kill me on my losers. Especially like last night, when you go 7-1!
