Just like players, refs have a style of "calling" a game. Some call it close, others let it go. I have never witnessed a ref betting on a game, most of the time, we use it as a figure of speech. BUT, refs do have a style. Some love up tempo game, they love to call fouls, run up the score. Others love giving road teams the advantage, others love home teams, some love low scoring games, some just don't want to be there.
Here is the point:
THEY ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT PEOPLE ON THE COURT in a regular season nba game.
Sometimes, even they can't hit the total (Utah Jazz free throw shooting) the other night.
Sometimes, they will hold grudges against individual players. If you're a total player, you HAVE to be aware of the refs.
Sometimes, they just are insignificant, and are just in the background. This is more true in the playoffs when all games are nationally televised and more scrutiny is on them. YOU HAVE to be aware that refs have control of the game. Not the players, not the coaches, it's the refs.
One time out, kills momentum, two offensive fouls in a row, kills a comeback.....
