the business model is very simple so anyone trying to complicate it lacks in comprehension.
1. there are several stations before the money reaches "vegas hotels and casinos" that actually is kind of a code word for a final hub everyone takes cover under.

let us say bet365 and 5dimes they both received bets on both sides of the same game ats. the best scenario and the easiest for them is to have both side with the same amount of money so they can easily grab the juice and move on. but that balancing does not happen by itself and they will try to manipulate into a balancing by several means including line releasing that will represent the best middle possible (they receive it from oddsmakers like lvsc and others called traders) and later doctoring the lines. if that succeeds - great - the outcome in both ways rewards the books and all is ok (but just imagine one bet among thousands released daily). the people who actually are responsible for that balancing are called traders and they are tightly connected to vegas casinos and hotels because in case the balancing is not there the books will take cover placing excess bets on either side at vegas casinos and hotels of their choice. now vegas has excess bets on either side and the traders will try to manipulate them into balancing by using media, gurus, touts... you name it. anything to convince us to take the bet side that will balance the money on both sides of the bet. if they succeed - that is great and all are happy. if they don't - they have to protect their investments by manipulating the outcome so they won't lose money.
nba is part of all this as other american pro sports as it needs dramas and entertainment that come by supplying "unexpected" results, miraculous comebacks, sudden droughts etc.
the rest i will leave for those intelligent among you to figure by yourselves. just remember that the simplest form of bias called point shaving was invented long ago by the person who is a base character for my avatar.

here is the real deal.
my picks are taking a serious chunk of business away from paid "experts" here and also harm the small time local bookies. when that happened to mk i remember a paid tout from vegas who was also appearing on tv coming to mk's site and openly inviting to vegas to work with him and openly was arguing why mk gives his picks free.
