As I was reading NBA playoff previews on ESPN the other day -- looking for some solid fade material-- I must say I came across something rather interesting. On the subject of this Blazers/Rockets series and the huge home-court advantage Portland holds, one of their writer's brought up an interesting point. He opined that the maniacal Rose Garden fans could possibly work against the young Blazers if they struggle early on and are unable to get off to a quick start. It's certainly a fair point. Look at that North Carolina/MSU title game a few weeks ago as an example. I know it's a completely different situation but still, how quiet was that crowd after the Tar Heels went up big early and killed all the buzz and excitement? The silence was defeaning. The crowd was completely deflated. If Portland comes out flat in the first quarter and the Rockets pounce on them, you're going to be able to hear a pin drop inside the Rose Garden tonight.
I think there's a ton of pressure on the Blazers to perform well. Their not sneaking up on anybody anymore. Their no longer the "darkhorse" or surprise team in the West. People are expecting them to play well and win. It would be completely normal for them to struggle in their first playoff game. Yet if they do, everybody is going to crucify them for it. Tons of pressure on such a young team. Will they be able to handle it?
Meanwhile, this Houston team is built for the playoffs. They're style of play is tailor made for the post-season with their stingy defense and ability to operate offensively in the half-court. With less whistles being blown in playoffs and more contact inside usually allowed, their physical and bruising game is certainly an asset. Let's not forget they do have two of the premier perimeter defenders in the entire league. You've seen Shane Battier and Ron Artest completely shutdown Lebron this year as well as many other top two guards. If they can take Brandon Roy out of the game that's going to put a lot of pressure on the rest of the Blazers.
I still think Portland has a great shot of winning this series, but I look for them to struggle a bit in their post-season debut.

agree. for houston, there's absolutely nothing to lose here. you've been deemed a team that can't advance past a first round, and here you are, losing your last game of the season that would've placed you three seeds higher, against a team you've had your way with all season. this is the most intriguing matchup of the first round imo, and i think houston wins round one.

Tracy McGrady is going to feel about this big if the Rockets advance:

Don't you think that at this far into the season that the Portland fans are accustomed to Trailblazers starting things off slow, and in essence being a "second half" team?

GL Value, with ref to the to the Tarheels MSU game this game is completely different in that the Tarheels are a class above msu and more balanced in every way. MSU was a good bet for anyone except against tarheels.
This game is more balanced it good go either way but Im expecting a Portland win and cover, of course in life you never expect too much. GL

I have seen nearly every Rocket game this year and am a Rockets fan. I honestly think they will have a lot a trouble tonight. The Rockets have trouble scoring against long athletic teams. If the Blazers front Yao, Houston will bog down on the offensive end and they often let struggles on offense affect their defense (see Mavs game). Seeing Artest up close for the first season he is overrated as a defender. Yao is their most skilled offense player and he cannot create his own shot. Talk about pressure for Blazers, media down here is killing Rockets for not winning a series in 12 years. Older team that doesnt have a true go to guy, or deadly outside shooter. Just my 2 pennies.

Rockets r 3-1 against Portland this year so they r very capable of winning. If Artest has one of his 33% shooting nights then the Rockets will b in trouble.
