Cappers and bettors often like to talk of revenge when a team plays another team or rival that beat them, or embarrassed them in some form or fashion. Frankly, the term/concept is often overused and it is very rare to find a true revenge situation in sports, or one that goes beyond winning or losing a game, or even a championship. But that is exactly what we have before us tomorrow night, when Russell Westbrook get’s to the face the man and the team that not only cost the Thunder a possible trip to the championships last year but also jeopardized Russell’s career as a basketball player. In fact, Russell Westbrook may never be the player he was before he suffered his knee injury at the hands of Patrick Beverley. Although the Thunder have played the Rockets twice this year, Russell didn’t play in either game. Why? Because of the very knee that Beverley injured, in what many perceived to be a cheap shot. In fact, during those playoffs Charles Barkley was adamant that if that had happened to him retribution would be swift and emphatic. Well, tomorrow is Russell’s chance for revenge; real revenge. Revenge that’s not just about a single game or even a championship but a man’s livelihood and career. I have waited an entire season for this day to come, ready to bet hundreds, if not thousands on the Thunder but I can’t, not anymore, and here is why…

The two times that the Thunder played the Rockets this year without Westbrook they beat the Rockets handily. In a way, they were getting revenge for their friend and teammate who couldn’t play because he aggravated/injured the very knee they were getting revenge for. Now Russell is back and although he is not yet 100% he will be ready for retribution tomorrow night. And the Thunder will be ready to back their guy. But herein lies the problem. If Russell is to take his revenge tomorrow can he be the guy? Is him being the guy, or “the man,” synonymous with the Thunder being at their best? Additionally if revenge is indeed a dish best served cold can we count on Westbrook to remain calm, cool and collected at the biggest moments of the game? Or will his hair-trigger temper cause him to do something foolish, stupid and detrimental to the team? If he doesn’t play within himself or gets too emotional, to the point of losing control, the Thunder will lose.

What’s more, the Thunder are missing two very important pieces, pieces without which revenge might be hard to come by. Kendrick Perkins may be a laughingstock (as far as NBA centers, or players, go) but he is one of the best in the league when it comes to defending and frustrating Dwight Howard (it has been this way since their Eastern Conference battles). If you don’t believe me, look at Howard’s numbers in the two games Perkins played. Perkins kept him in check, which is very important if you want to beat the Rockets. The other key player who is missing is Sefolosha, who is a very good defender in his own right. If you don’t believe both these guys are important just look at what Deandre Jordan, Gasol, Meeks, Dragic, and Green have done against the Thunder in recent games. In other words, the Thunder come into this game at less than full strength and in a mini slump to boot

Meanwhile, the Rockets, who have lost two straight to the Thunder come into this game as one of the hottest teams in the league (if not the hottest). They want to prove (to themselves as much as everyone else) that they belong and are legitimate contenders for the title, and perhaps, get a little revenge of their own. After all, Harden was traded to the Rockets and OKC has owned the Rockets, for the most part, since that trade. Both teams were so looking forward/ahead to this game that they both overlooked their opponents on Sunday. Unlike the Thunder, however, who lost to the lowly Lakers, the Rockets were somehow able to take care of business at home against a tough Blazers team. And now, are we supposed to believe that the Thunder can, for one night, get their act together and defeat the Rockets (for a third time) in a televised game because Russell must have his revenge?

If Westbrook isn't what he used to be then... Beverly's physicality will own him this game don't you think this is Beverly's chance to shut Westbrook down? If anything this is a durant vs harden game, hardens chance to prove his team is elite and he can lead his team to victory against durant

from where i see it, you can never put russell and revenge in a sentence together.
i have to admit he is good, but when "revenge" is on his mind, he wants to put matters into his own hands. and we all know that aint good for the thunder.
i think its not a coincidence this season that the thunder have identical records with and without westbrook playing. well yes, his presence last season specially in the playoffs were missed. but i guessed the thunder have pieces in jackson that will suffice.
so to answer the thread, if youre taking okc because of revenge on westbrook's mind, i dont think that would be really smart. he often messes up the offensive flow just because he wants to "put matters into his own hands"

The climax will be tomorrow night! This is simply to set the stage. If the Thunder were at their peak, this would be a no brainer. But, as it is, I may have to pass. There are better/easier games on the board tomorrow night.

In hindsight, it seems as if the team (without Westbrook) was better fit to take revenge, because of the very reasons you mention.

For me,this is a great spot to bet the rockets...who is going to cover harden...and the inside?Okc is full of holes right now...and the rockets are getting going. And the revenge angle can be applied to the rockets as well who lost 2 times to them this season...

Breaking this write-up into a few paragraphs would make it loads easier to read. Other than that, I like what you had to say. (I don't care what anyone says, Beverley's play last year was NOT dirty.)
Also a PASS for me.

Not to be one of those guys, but...

I would be more interested in it if the Lakers lost to the Thunder. Beating them makes this game that much tougher to cap.
I do think LC's angle, regarding a defensive type game, is a bad one, since, supposedly, that's what the Thunder have been working on the last two days. Although 5 units might be too much. BTW, early line on your Knicks is -2 against the Celtics. Didn't even wait for a writeup from you. Took the Knicks as Celtics will be coming off a back to back against Indiana. Also love the Clips to take my warriors to the woodshed tomorrow in a double revenge game with dubs coming off a back to back. The line for that game is a bit high -5.5, but here is a game where you can count on the Clips to keep there foot on the pedal.

That should say, LC's angle is not a bad one.
