'85 BEARS still best ever

To say the '07 Pats aren't close to the best team ever is ridiculous. I am only 22 so I never saw the '72 Dolphins or the '85 Bears play, but the '07 Pats are the single greatest team I have personally ever witnessed. Yes, they lost in the game that mattered the most, but they were still one hell of a team that dominated the league. Eli Manning and the Giants defense played a perfect game today, and thats what it takes to beat a great team like the Pats.

The '07 Pats will live on undoubtedly the greatest offense to ever play the game.

I would have to put the 89 Niners and 94 Niners as the best that I have seen the last 30 years. These Niners teams were better than the 84 Niners because of Jerry Rice, I feel.

They were definitely impressive, but I would say the Bucs a few years ago against the Raiders was the best defensive performance in a Super Bowl I have personally ever seen. The Ravens were also amazing in the 2000 Super Bowl against the Giants.

As for not being the best offense, every offense has a bad game at least once in 19 games, and they had already shown they could pick this defense apart in Week 17. Statistically nobody even comes close except for maybe the Rams Greatest Show on Turf, but even they weren't that impressive in the Super Bowl, and ended up losing to the Pats.

If the 85 Bears were the best ever, how come they only won the SB one year?

Unfortunately, that is it. Greatest team, no.
Defense wins.....take all the offense you want.
2 highest scoring offenses didn't win the big game.
The 2 best D's, the Bears and Ravens, did.

The 2007 patriots cannot be in the discussion as greatest team ever considering they did'nt win anything all the great teams of the past are all better because they won the one game that matters......The patriots are nothing more than another good offensive team who could not win the big game.........That is why every year people say defense's win championships.......And there was no defense better than the 85 bears!!!!!!!!

Cowboys of the 90's with the triplets would have given the 85 Bears some problems.

Comparing teams from different eras head to head


You have to compare them on how they dominated their peers at the time.  The Miami Dolphins of 2007 would have destroyed the 85 Bears and the Steelers of the 70s just do to the fact that the Offensive and Defensive lines are much stronger/bigger/quicker then they were back then.  The same could be said about the WR, RB, DBs, all faster then they were back in those eras. 

 

I believe this thread is about greatest team in a certain year, not greatest dynasty. I am going to go with the homer pick and agree that the 85 bears were the best ever. That defense was simply amazing...and then of course you had sweetness on the other side of the ball.

Not saying anyone here is right or wrong, but what you wrote kind of supports the main argument that the 85 Bears were "the best ever".

The Steelers did have more players who are now in the HOF. This goes to show the Bears did it with players that were obviously not as good as the Steelers because more of the Steelers from that team did make it to the HOF.

I wouldn't say best team ever but the '85 bears rank very high.  They did dominate their playoffs and SB victories unlike the Pats.

The Bears lost the NFC Championship Game in 1984. They won the Super Bowl in '85. In 1986, they went 14-2 and lost in the playoffs to the Redskins because The Packers' Charles Martin body slammed Jim McMahon and knocked him out for the season earlier in the year. In 1987, it was a strike season but the Bears still won 11 games and lost to the Skins again. Bad year. In 1988, they made it to the NFC Championship game and lost to the 49ers. In 1990, they lost in the divisional playoffs to the Giants. All of those teams won the Super Bowl. The NFC was dominate and if the Bears were in the AFC in the 1980's, they would have made it to 6 Super Bowls and won 3 of them.
