Nobody is really talking about it, but the Falcons were very lucky to escape today - but all could have been prevented if they would have gone for 2 up 26-7 with 2:10 left in the 3rd qtr.
Dont think any debate could be made to support the kicking of the EP there vs going for 2.

Was Brian Billick on drugs during that game? The stuff that he said down the stretch was amazing. Down by 6, kick a FG with 40 secs left and then onsides kick it? And many others.
Shocking this guy was a coach, and is being considered by the Eagles.

I'm a bit confused as to why it was so important for the Texans to go for 2 down 12 with I believe 6 minutes left. If they miss, they are 2 td's down, as opposed to 2 scores.

Honestly even in this day and age it is incredible how stupid these guys are managing a game or actually trying to win. Just when you think you've seen it all.
McCarthy punting last night on 4th and 4 at midfield down 14 was WTF
John Fox bringing in Peyton Manning and not letting him pass on 3rd and 7 with 1.30 left. Then kneeling with 2 TO's left at the end of regulation.
On at least two occasions this year I saw teams down 24 score a TD and then kick the extra point. So instead of trying to make it a 2 score game you'll settle for a 3 score game?
Teams giving up at the end is another one. Just throwing short crap over the middle and chewing clock ala the Texans today. Honestly what do they have to lose by throwing bombs? It certainly has to be a better % to win the game than throwing 5 yard throws and burning the clock.
Rant over.

Well, it is never done but it is the right thing.
You need to make a 2 point conversion at some point. Going for it on the first TD allows you to know ahead of time if you made it or not, allowing you to know you need 2 more TDs so you can forego kicking a FG.
It lets you know now what you need rather than waiting until later, when it is too late because you have already kicked the FG.
For the purposes of drama, it is better to wait- but for the purposes of winning the game, they did exactly the right thing.

I've said my piece on Billick a few times today but drugs would actually be better then just a complete fool with no knowledge to speak of. I find it incredibly offensive that this guy makes good cash with a dream job and actually knows less about the game then you or I. The comment about kicking a FG and onside kicking it was so F'N stupid I couldn't believe what I heard. I honestly think we'll see a headline on a ticker this week saying he was fired by Fox. No chance this guy gets another NFL coaching job and it's nothing short of a miracle that Baltimore won a Super Bowl with this douche as coach and Trent Dilfer at QB. Speaks volumes about the greatness of Ray Lewis and Baltimores D that season.

John Fox is the biggest dope of the week. This freaking puscyy takes a godamn knee!!!! With 30+ seconds left and 2 timeouts in regulation. Foxy looked like Santa Claus out there, freezing his a$$ off, dude must've had a brain freeze for a second ans thought tebow was still the qb. That's why he took the knee.Has to be.

mike smith does some stupid garbage from time to time. we've all seen it. on the other hand, i remember looking at Atl vs. the giants this season and one reason i played them is because they haven't lost two in a row since the 2009 season so he must be doing something right.
billick was terrible but the announcers are so bad almos across the board these days that i hardly even notice anymore, especially when dierdorf makes an appearance over thee weekend.

how do you think fox felt after he has manning take a knee with 0:31 seconds left and 2 timeouts in regulation after watching matt ryan win the game with exactly 0:31 seconds left in regulation?

I pulled up Covers to check for this EXACT thread from you and, viola, here it is. I was watching the game with a group of people and I was screaming at the TV for the Falcons for go for 2 at that point (and ESPECIALLY after 2 offsides penalties by the Seahawks making the attempt even shorter) and they thought I was nuts. I kept bringing it up and by the end of the game they were asking me to manage their 401k accounts, lol.
Another very interesting dynamic was Atlanta got EXTREMELY lucky that Seattle scored their TD with about :31 to go. At that point, they needed to let them score and preserve time to go along with their 2 timeouts remaining. I was half-expecting ATL to just stand up on defense on that play and let him score, but alas it didn't happen. As a counter to THAT, it would have almost behooved SEA to go down at the 1 foot line and try to get their TD with as little amount of time as possible. Although it could be argued that is playing with fire and you take the lead there no matter what.
All in all, it was a fascinating game and ending strategy-wise.

It's not an obvious call, you just got burned on your bet. Making a 3 TD game vs a 2 TD+2FG game with 14 minutes to play.
Seattle had 4 possessions in that span, scored 3 TDs and 1 punt. Smith becomes a huge idiot if they scored 2 TDs and 2 FGs to win by 1 after failed 2pt.
Coaches will not think of this stuff in the middle of the hectic game and they'll keep it safe with the kick.

I had money on Atl -2.5 but still don't agree with going for 2 to go up 21. Being up by 20 forces your opponent to score 3 tds anyway where as 19 is a number where they can squeeze a FG with 2 td 2pt conv.
I have to say what kills me is going for 2 to go up by 6. I don't care what any coach says it makes no sense.
The logic is going up by 2 fgs really? What if you don't make the 2 pt and go up by 4. Your opponent then comes back and scores a td and now you are down by 3. Kick the xp to go up by 5 and force your opponent to score a td and go for 2 to go up by 3.
I am all ears to hear what you guys say

Well, I won my bet because of it. So strike one.
There was 17 minutes left (not 14), so strike two.
If you cant think of when to go for 2 points instead of one, especially after 2 offsides calls (the ball would have been at the 3/4 yard line) - even in a "hectic game", then you probably shouldnt be a coach or you should hire someone to make these decisions.
Strike 3. I think you, Brian Billick, John Fox, and Mike Smith are out.

Agree with the point about ATL getting lucky that it was ruled a TD.

what was your play? i bet Atl as soon as i saw it at 2 last sunday. i thought i was doing well with that line and added another unit at 2 for my biggest play of the playoffs.
but i can't do much right in the playoffs. had denver in a ml parlay, had RG3 last weekend, had marvin lewis in the worst coached game i can remember. it's been pretty ugly.

Wrong. You kick the extra point there and your down 11, a touchdown 2 pt conversion and FG as opposed to needing two TD's

Tard boy, Seattle had 4 full possessions in that time. What happens if Seattle scored 2 TDs, and a FG, then on their last goal line possession they kick a chip shot as time expires?
You knew Seattle would score 3 TDs and punt instead of 2 TDs and 2 FGs?
Captain Hindsight, you are relieved of duty.

I had Sea +2.5, and Hou +9.5 today.
Had Balt and SF yesterday.
Hou was my biggest play though.

That team doesn't have a killer instinct and it will haunt them for all games with high importance, including next weekend.
They were in a very difficult situation this week not having ever won a playoff game with this group, they'll be in a much better presence of mind if they get the chance again
