Read my post again.  I think you missed the point.

You have 2 options.  Go for 2 now and know for sure whether you need one TD and one FG, or 2 TDS.

Or go for 2 later and not have the benefit of knowing what you need.

yeah, i had houston +9- today too.  i'm stitting at 1-4-1 in the playoffs.  it took joe webb getting inserted into the starting lineup against GB 10 minutes before kickoff for me to get an easy win.

i had to check my account and see if i lost on this play.

I'm 99.9% confident all you guys would be making many of the same boneheaded mistakes if we put you on the sideline as head coach.

OK - then shouldnt they hire a guy who does nothing but make strategy and time decisions?

I get your point.  People have made it for years.  There is a lot going on with X's and O's, lots of management etc.

How much is a win worth in the NFL?  Surely enough to pay some math whiz to stand next to the coach and tell him when he should go for two or his best time to call timeouts.

No I don't think you get it, there's really only one option, they were just fortunate to get the conversion, but it was the wrong call

Why would you not go for 2 on the first TD?  For drama?  To prolong the unknown?

THere is a benefit from going for 2 on the first TD.  You KNOW whether the FG should be attempted later or whether a FG is out of the equation.

So tell me genius, why is there "only one option"?

When the Falcons were up 26-7 I guess I can understand not going for two because you are up TWENTY points with just over a quarter left. 

But with Houston, why the hell would you go for 2 when you're down 12? If you don't convert, and they only did because Andre Johnson is a freak, then you're down by 2 TDs again instead of a field goal, TD, and 2 point conversion if you just settle for down 11.

Alright, let me try this again....

You are down by 12.

You can either:

A.  Go for 1, and then you need a FG and you go for 2 on your next TD.

B.  Go for 2, and by going for 2, you know ahead of time if you need 2 td's or whether you can kick the FG or not.

B is the better option.  A is better if you want to prolong the drama - but why wait until it is too late to find out what you need?  On that 4th and 3 from the 20 yard line, wouldnt you want to know whether kicking the FG is going to do you any good or not?

@ the 3/4 line I definitely would. Its just tough when after you score a td and your instinct is to kick an xp. Even gaining those penalty yards and having your kicking special teams unit out there it takes a really good coach to think out of the box to call your them off the field and put your offense on.

Maybe Belichek, Harbaugh, Cowher would have made that call

I agree with you, they should hire someone who's only job is to do nothing else but think about these scenarios.  They should also put them up in the booth with the coordinators to give them as much a detached view as possible.  It will still add some analysis paralysis since they are making decisions with actual scrutiny and repercussions being applied, but it would be way way way less than the coaches on the field get in those situations.

I agree with the philosophy, but it's evident to me that its not 100%. Teams and players get better and it should correlate with team maturity but it doesn't. Younger teams within the conference have passed them I had Atlanta today and am pissed that they couldn't put away a team that they could have; terrine coaching.

Honestly even in this day and age it is incredible how stupid these guys are managing a game or actually trying to win. Just when you think you've seen it all.

McCarthy punting last night on 4th and 4 at midfield down 14 was WTF

John Fox bringing in Peyton Manning and not letting him pass on 3rd and 7 with 1.30 left. Then kneeling with 2 TO's left at the end of regulation.

On at least two occasions this year I saw teams down 24 score a TD and then kick the extra point. So instead of trying to make it a 2 score game you'll settle for a 3 score game?

Teams giving up at the end is another one. Just throwing short crap over the middle and chewing clock ala the Texans today. Honestly what do they have to lose by throwing bombs? It certainly has to be a better % to win the game than throwing 5 yard throws and burning the clock.

I'm still in denial fox didnt let manning throw it on 3rd down. I had broncos-4 on a teaser and -7 on a parlay and then..................bloodbath john fox  Leaving it up to a defense that just allowed 35 points! I think it was a reflex from last year he must have thought tebow was his quarterback that moment.

Smith is no genius, just watching  him talk makes me think of him taking the little bus to school.  Fox takes the cake for chickenshit stupidity though, further lessening Manning's post season woes.   As far as going for 2, it makes some sense.  The question is whether Bill Bellicheck would do it.  Whatever he says is correct.

Anyone notice Simms saying texans should go for field goal than Hail Mary when down 13?   The other announcer corrected him, would have been better if he called him a dumbass.  How about Simms and billick for Super Bowl.

You dont go for 2 in the 3rd quarter! There are numerous scenarios and some scoring stll left. Monday in a very easy time to be a coach

Speaking of in game strategy and theory, does anyone else get annoyed with teams when they have it 4th and 4 yards or less at their opponents 40 or so yard line and punt the ball?

Given how much of an advantage receivers and offenses have in this league, I feel like teams should be going for it on an almost automatic basis in these situations.

Any thoughts?

How about Carroll NOT burning more clock before scoring that go ahead TD and Making Atlanta use their timeouts and maybe they only have 15 seconds to go 50 yards to fick the field goal and win the game..

@tonyaharding --- you nailed it on the texans going for 2, but much like the falcons onside kick, it goes largely forgotten because the result of the game didn't change.  Down 12 with the extra point coming you should never never never never go for 2.  That was idiotic, and I was loving it because I had a middle at 10, but still couldn't believe my eyes.   You are dead right... if you miss that, you now need 2 touchdowns.  At 11 you sitll need a touchdown and a field goal.... same as you need down 10.   Crazy.

Meanwhile, Anyone on the boards not saying SF and Baltimore ?
