the question in my mind, is a QB who runs a lot similar to a basketball point guard who shoots too much?   I think both can be detrimental to their teams success

of course there are exceptions like MJ with the Bulls for example

The only 2 pure pocket passers left are Stafford and Goff? I consider Mahomes a running QB...so many of his plays in crunch time involve him running down the field for vital yards. 

I don't think there is a such a thing as a pure running QB, they are dual threat. In Lamar's  first season, he was a dual threat QB.

 The term “running QB” is subjective.    In this exercise my definition is Over 25 yards and Over 5 attempts per game.

That's well put. I understand what the purpose of the thread is, makes you think.

I suppose that a qb can and will make his run game work throughout a season. It is something that's not easy to defend. 

But, when you get into the heart of the playoffs and possibly the SB, the qb absolutely needs to be a good passer. The level of defense that he'll face as he gets closer to the SB gets theoretically better.

That's what I'm getting out of it.

Mahomes is always looking to throw first. And while running he's still looking to throw. He's also very crafty with his scrambles. He actually fakes slides, has defensive players all messed up. They know that it's a fine line between a 15 yard penalty and Mahomes trotting by them for a first down.

The dude is a unicorn. Hence 3 super bowl titles.

Old record is set for break. I'm not saying record will get surpassed in this Super Bowl, but it could happen. John Elway, Steve Young, Patrick Mahomes are excellent pocket passers as well as running options. Besides, these running QBs still need solid defense and good coaching to win the championships.

 It's a good question...l think a QB can run too much if he doesn't go through his progressions while in the pocket.  In fact , I think Lamar Jackson faced some criticism early in his career by doing just this,  and instead tucked  the ball and ran.  It's  a complicated question ; certainly,  you need protection in order to go through your progressions.

I think Lamar has developed into quite a good passer,  and doesn't appear to be a run first QB as much ,   though they do designed runs for him from time to time. 

A lot run because reading a defense takes some intelligence. You can dink and dump all night on a defense even if you can run a 4.3 40 if you know how to read a defense. Many in the NFL today do not. Its why you see retarded shit pop up with Daniels I think last week. OC called a fucking triple option. It failed miserably and I just rolled my eyes.

The times they are a changing my friend.. Just like the fullback was a huge part of the game at one point now hardly a one left.. In 5 years or so from now the "pocket passer" only will be a thing of the past.. Swim with the tide or sink in it.. Not many true ones left now..  And they are aging... Should be an entertaining future..

If the QB runs too much, he gets battered. This throws off his accuracy. Seems logical.

I would put an asterisk* by Mahomes* because he picks up his running in the postseason. There are designed running plays that the Chiefs do not use in the reg season, and he scampers tiptoeing on the sidelines....in the postseason. He seems indestrutible....He won a SB with a hobble, after a tackler landed on his ankle.

If he did this during the reg season, he would not make it. So they do not call his number to scramble. Logical.

Chiefs need a healthy Pacheco.

Balt is a "dual threat" because of Derrick Henry. Stating the obvious.

If Balt can't get past Buffalo with Henry, then it's on their HC. He will make some boneheaded calls to screw it up....

Lamar is playing like Steve Young on steroids this season. I think Monken has brought the best balance out of him. His avg rush attempts is the lowest of his career -- 8.1 carries where he used to average 10 to 11 carries earlier in his career. I imagine this was also designed to conserve Lamar's legs for the playoffs but he has the weapons to get it done through the air as well as on the ground

Of course having Henry helps. Majority of super bowl winning teams had a good complimentary running back. Makes things a bit easier for the QB and recievers

I think the chiefs O line will have more success against the Texans D than Texans O line will have vs chiefs D.   Same thing with eagles and rams, eagles O line is that much better, I believe

This is interesting.    I sometimes wonder about the intelligence or processing speed of different QBs.    In Daniels case, I cut him some slack, as I do all rookies.    Even Mahomes said that it took him a season and a half to figure things out.    In other cases, intelligence may or may not be the issue, it could be processing speed, which is something else altogether.

sometimes the problem is the teacher, not the student.   Look at Darnold, he had a good season even though he was mostly mediocre with other teams until this year.     But he still seems a tick slow at processing info, IMO

you may very well be right.    

Although I would point out that the two #1 seeds have QBs that have rushed for less than 25 yds/gm, not the great QBs who who’ve rushed for 40 or 50 yards per game this season
