Chris Sims makes some excellent points here...some credit must be given to KC's D but of course the Niner fans will never admit that the Chiefs' D is any good even after coming up with critical stops in the 4th quarter. How about Chris Jones' batting down some passes near line of scrimmage after being prevented from penetrating the pocket? Weren't they good plays?

49ers turned one dimensional and afraid mid third quarter...they were killing it with the run first approach. I dont think KC's defense was great, I think the 49ers lost their game plan and their QB is not confident enough to take over under pressure.
I also think the 49er defensive secondary was playing way too far off the ball and made it easy for the Chiefs to score points as they did. Playing 7-10 yards off the receiver was a horrible decision yet they did it for most of the second half.
I commented in a thread earlier this week that the 49er defense had not faced teams that tested them enough in the passing game to tell if they were top tier or not and we saw that with the game on the line they could not get enough stops in the second half.

The Niners D did a great job overall. They denied deep passes all game long until the 40 yarder to Tyreek Hill.
I re watched the game today, that specific play I looked at 5 times.
The brilliance of Mahomes is uncanny. He knew that the pass rush was getting home on just about every play. So, FROM SHOTGUN, the guy does a 10 step dropback. You can not coach that guys. Nor can a QB with an average arm even dream to do something like that. The ball was on the 35 on 3rd n 15. Mahomes threw the ball from the 21 and still got hit. He deliberately turned 3rd n 15 to 3rd n 29 because he knew he needed the time for the routes to develop.
The Niners were playing zone up to the sticks, at the sticks zone becomes man, Mosley bit on Watkins.
That play has zero chance if Mahomes doesn't drop back so far out of shotgun, the pass rush would of eaten him up.
That play was a big game changer. And quite honestly I don't think anyone could of defensed it.

It was a brilliant play set up by an earlier play in the first half (read Peter King's column on NBC sports website). That is also the play where Bosa was held. He had Mahomes dead to rights if not held on that play. Watch it again. I bet if the Niners had to do it all over again, they blitz in that situation. That was the ballgame and like the Chiefs later with Jimmy G, they needed to be ultra aggressive.

It's hard to call that holding BB. Bosa took an inside move and the LT rode him all the way in, I didn't see him grabbing cloth.
It's impressive that Mahomes called for the play himself. He knew how far back he had to drop.
Not cloth. Just an arm wrapped around his neck/head pulling/tugging him back. Last I checked, that is holding as well. I don't think this team recovers. They had so many things break right for them this year (which they can't count on next year), and they are not a one-man-team that relies on a transcendent superstar player to elevate everyone. I think Harbaugh's Niners were built tougher. They withstood that SB loss and almost returned the following year against all odds. Almost. This team seems more fragile, and a loss like this can break them. I'll be surprised f they make the playoffs next year and shocked if they get to the SB.

I couldnt believe they were playing 7-10 yards off AND not blitzing, you cant play soft zone and also not blitz...all he had to do is improvise and avoid the initial rush and the receivers were just standing alone over and over and over. I also got sick of listening to Aikman be a jinx the whole game..so many times he would yack about how the Chiefs hadnt been converting a 3rd down all game and they get it or how Mahomes hadnt connected with a route and defensive matchup, he goes and does just that. Aikman just forces strong opinions every down and I forgot how annoying he is to listen to.
I dont know why the 49ers refused to play tight initial coverage from that 5 yards and in area in the second half. When the Chiefs were down 10 I made the comment that the game was far from over and likely benefited them because they would have to be more aggressive and pass more and they did that the rest of the game and the 49ers had no answer and no coverage with awful tackling.

I agree with you. And here is where Spagnoodle's SB experience really paid off. As they game progressed, his defense became more aggressive and took more chances (knowing you gotta go win the game) while the Niners and Saleh just tried to hang on. The contrast in styles/mindset/approach by the two defensive coordinators was obvious. Oddly enough, Saleh had better players than Spagnoodle at his disposal but that itself might have prevented him from taking chances or making decisions he did not think he had to make

Shanny is to blame....last 20 something plays 16 was throwing plays and like only 6-8 run plays what does that tell u?plus before the first half ended why the hell did the Niners not call a time out wit 1min and change left? They had enuf timeouts still? Shanny was really bad at managing this game before both half ended...

You guys act like all that SF needed to do was hand the ball off but several times the KC D either stopped the Niner runners for minimal gains or for losses...some of those passes that Jimmy G missed were short 6 to 10 yard passes that even he can make.
Of course it would never occur to you to now admit that the KC D is better than you thought it was cause your egos couldn't stand to admit that your take was flawed from the very beginning.
Your conclusions of from what has transpired are not valid.

They had a 96% chance winning the game with 7 minutes to go. Has the world lost its mind? They just had to make one or two plays, on offense or defense, to ice the game. Your team had 4% chance of winning. It was simply a bad beat for Niners backers. It happens. When such things have happened to me and I’ve won I’ve always admitted. Instead of sadistically kicking those while they are down have some humility, please.

SF averaged 6.4 YPRA. They were manhandling KC's weak rushing DEF. To turn away from that when you have a double-digit lead in the 4th quarter was an asinine decision.

I wouldn’t put much stock in this “winning percentages” haha that percentage is based on pure numbers. Especially in a do or die game against one of the highest powered offenses the league has seen in awhile. KC D stepped up big time. 10 point deficit isn’t much for an offense like that once they grab momentum
